since 1972; academician in 1993. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Dnepropetrovsk <strong>University</strong><br />

in 1952. He became Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> Language Institute in 1966 and<br />

has served as Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute's sec<strong>to</strong>r on etymology and onomastics. His<br />

works are on <strong>the</strong> etymology <strong>of</strong> Slavic languages and on East Slavic onomastics. He<br />

has been edi<strong>to</strong>r-in-Chief <strong>of</strong> Etymology since 1963. (GSE 26, p. 389.)<br />

<strong>Academy</strong> since 1974. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> philology department <strong>of</strong> Leningrad<br />

State <strong>University</strong> in 1939. From 1977 <strong>to</strong> February 1988, he served as Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

A. M. Gorkiy World Literature Institute in Moscow which is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

academy's Literature and Language department. It serves as <strong>the</strong> principal body in <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> for research on contemporary Soviet and foreign literature.<br />

Dmitriev, Ana<strong>to</strong>lii V., D. Phil. S. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> in 1993. In<br />

1976, he was a Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> socioeconomic Problems Institute in St.<br />

Petersburg which was established in 1975. He is leading studies on <strong>the</strong> scientific<br />

background <strong>of</strong> concepts <strong>of</strong> social development <strong>of</strong> Soviet society.<br />

Domashnev, Ana<strong>to</strong>lii I. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Literature and Language<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> in 1993, and member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bureau <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department.<br />

Fedorenko, Nikolai T., C. Phi. S. Born in 1912 in Piatigorsk. <strong>Russian</strong> philologist and<br />

orientalist. State and public figure. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor (1953) . Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Literature and Language Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1958. Son <strong>of</strong> a worker.<br />

He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Moscow Institute <strong>of</strong> Oriental Studies in 1937. In 1954, he<br />

became an ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR From 1955 <strong>to</strong><br />

1958, he was Deputy minister <strong>of</strong> foreign affairs. From 1958 <strong>to</strong> 1962, he served as<br />

ambassador <strong>to</strong> Iapan. From 1963 <strong>to</strong> 1968, he was permanent representative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

USSR <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> UN and from 1963 <strong>to</strong> 1968 he was USSR representative on <strong>the</strong> UN<br />

Security Council. In 1970, he became edi<strong>to</strong>r-in-Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> journal inostrannaia<br />

(aya) literatura (Foreign Literature). In 1971, he became secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

administrative board <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Writers' Union <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR From 1966 <strong>to</strong> 1971, he was<br />

a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Central Auditing Commission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CPSU. He is an honorary<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> China Research Institute in Tokyo (1961) and honorary academician<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Florence <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Fine Arts (1975). In 1988, he was appointed advisor <strong>to</strong><br />
