Osipov, Gennadii V., D. Phil. S. Born in 1929. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Philosophy and Law Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1987; academician in 1993.<br />

In 1991, he was made Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sociopolitical Studies Institute in Moscow<br />

which was organized in 1991. The institute has a staff <strong>of</strong> 109 researchers, 82 <strong>of</strong><br />

whom have advanced postgraduate degrees. Institute structure: The institute is<br />

structured in<strong>to</strong> three centers, two Departments, and four sec<strong>to</strong>rs as follows: Centers:<br />

(1.) <strong>the</strong> center for sociopolitical and methodological problems with sec<strong>to</strong>rs on interethnic<br />

relations, sociology <strong>of</strong> public consciousness, <strong>the</strong> sociology <strong>of</strong> religion, and a<br />

group on social movements; (2.) <strong>the</strong> center for social information and public opinion<br />

with a Department on comparative sociological studies, and (3.) <strong>the</strong> consultation<br />

center for sociopolictical problems. Departments: (1.) <strong>the</strong> Department on <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory<br />

and methodology <strong>of</strong> sociology with sec<strong>to</strong>rs on <strong>the</strong> preparation <strong>of</strong> manuals and<br />

teaching aids on sociology, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> sociology with groups on <strong>the</strong><br />

compilation <strong>of</strong> international and Soviet dictionaries on sociology, <strong>the</strong> creation and<br />

use <strong>of</strong> systems <strong>of</strong> indica<strong>to</strong>rs and <strong>the</strong> explanation <strong>of</strong> indexes <strong>of</strong> social development;<br />

(2.) <strong>the</strong> Department on fast public opinion polls. Sec<strong>to</strong>rs: (1.) <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>to</strong>r on<br />

socioeconomic problems; (2.) <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>to</strong>r on <strong>the</strong> sociology <strong>of</strong> agriculture; (3.) <strong>the</strong><br />

sec<strong>to</strong>r on <strong>the</strong> sociology <strong>of</strong> youth, and (4.) <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>to</strong>r on <strong>the</strong> dynamics <strong>of</strong> social<br />

groups. Current research thrusts: Research in this institute is subordinated <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

research program <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Philosophy and Law <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR<br />

(<strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>) and all <strong>of</strong> it is under <strong>the</strong> general supervision <strong>of</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r G. V.<br />

Osipov.<br />

Stepin, Viacheslav S., D. Phil. S. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philosophy and Law<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1987; academician in 1993. In 1988, he was<br />

named <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philosophy Institute in Moscow that dates back <strong>to</strong> 1929<br />

and researches all aspects <strong>of</strong> philosophy. It was in this institute that <strong>the</strong> first<br />

sociological sections were formed. The Institute for Sociological Research and <strong>the</strong><br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Concrete Social Research both grew out <strong>of</strong> this institute. The institute has<br />

a staff <strong>of</strong> some 326 researchers <strong>of</strong> whom 101 hold doc<strong>to</strong>ral degrees and 169 have<br />

candidate degrees. There are two academicians and four corresponding members <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> on <strong>the</strong> staff. The institute has six Departments<br />

with sec<strong>to</strong>rs and three labora<strong>to</strong>ries: (1.) dialectics, <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> cognition and logic:<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> cognition; <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> dialectics; general methodology <strong>of</strong> science, and<br />

philosophical problems <strong>of</strong> thinking and creative work; (2.) philosophy <strong>of</strong> science<br />

and technology: patterns <strong>of</strong> his<strong>to</strong>rical development <strong>of</strong> sciences; socioethnic problems<br />

<strong>of</strong> science; philosophy <strong>of</strong> physics; philosophy <strong>of</strong> biology, and philosophy <strong>of</strong> technology;<br />

(3.) social philosophy: his<strong>to</strong>rical materialism; philosophical and<br />

methodological problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> social sciences; philosophy <strong>of</strong> politics, and a<br />

Labora<strong>to</strong>ry for Philosophical Problems <strong>of</strong> Ethnology; (4.) philosophical<br />

anthropology, ethics and es<strong>the</strong>tics: philosophical problems <strong>of</strong> man; ethics; es<strong>the</strong>tics,<br />

and philosophy <strong>of</strong> culture; (5.) his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Marxist philosophy and problems <strong>of</strong><br />

socialism: Marxist philosophy in <strong>the</strong> 19th-early 20th centuries; Marxist philosophical<br />

thought in <strong>the</strong> 20th century, and concepts <strong>of</strong> socialism and modern civilization; (6.)<br />

<strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> philosophy: his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Western philosophy; his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

philosophy; philosophy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> non-Soviet Orient, and contemporary Western<br />

philosophy--with labora<strong>to</strong>ries in post-classical philosophy (literature, arts, and<br />

policy); sociocultural forecasting; coordination <strong>of</strong> philsophical and social problems<br />

<strong>of</strong> science and technology. Stepin is heading research in <strong>the</strong> human dimension <strong>of</strong><br />

scientific-technical progress.<br />
