continual integration. In 1971, he received <strong>the</strong> State Prize and in 1975, he was <strong>the</strong><br />

recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prestigious Dannie Heineman Prize for Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Physics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

American Physical Society. In 1975, he formalized <strong>the</strong> quantification <strong>of</strong> particle-like<br />

solutions (soli<strong>to</strong>ns) <strong>of</strong> field-<strong>the</strong>ory equations. Methods developed by him are<br />

employed in various fields <strong>of</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matics, in quantum mechanics, and in <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> elementary particles. From 1985 <strong>to</strong> 1987, he has served as Vice President<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Union when he became president. He is head <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> National Committee <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>maticians <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> Federation. He also<br />

heads <strong>the</strong> International Institute named after I. Eiler located in St Petersburg. (GSE<br />

ma<strong>the</strong>matician. He became an academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> in 1970, and Deputy Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department in August<br />

1988. He graduated from Leningrad State <strong>University</strong> in 1948. He began working at<br />

<strong>the</strong> V. A. Steklov Institute that same year. In August 1988, he was selected <strong>to</strong> be<br />

<strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> famous V. A. Steklov Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Institute in Moscow. His<br />

works are on transport equations, quantum field <strong>the</strong>ory, generalized solutions <strong>of</strong><br />

equations in convolutions, holomorphic functions <strong>of</strong> many complex variables, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> multi-dimensional linear passive systems, <strong>the</strong> geometric <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong><br />

numbers, quadratic formulas for functional integrals, <strong>the</strong> monte-carlo method, and<br />
