Skulachev, Vladimir P. Born in 1935 in Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong> biochemist. Corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physical and Chemical Biology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since<br />

1974; academician in 1993. He graduated from Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1957,<br />

and joined <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> university in 1960. Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Bio-<br />

Energetics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> interdepartmental labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> bio-organic chemistry from 1965<br />

<strong>to</strong> 1973, and in 1973, he became Head <strong>of</strong> that labora<strong>to</strong>ry. His works are in <strong>the</strong><br />

mechanics <strong>of</strong> biological oxidation. Recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Prize, 1975. Lenin<br />

Komsomol Prize in Science & Technology, 1967. The A. N. Bakh Prize, 1972. He<br />

is presently serving on <strong>the</strong> Bureau governing body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physical and Chemical<br />

Biology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. (GSE 23, p. 514.)<br />

Spirin, Aleksandr S., D. Bio S. Born in 1931 in Kaliningrad, Moscow Oblast.<br />

<strong>Russian</strong> biochemist. Academician <strong>of</strong> Physical and Chemical Biology Department <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> RAS since 1970. He graduated from Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1954, where<br />

he studied under A. N. Belozerskii. In 1962, he was Head <strong>of</strong> a labora<strong>to</strong>ry at <strong>the</strong> A.<br />

N. Bakh Institute <strong>of</strong> Biochemistry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. Since 1967, he has been<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pushchino Protein Research Institute that was established in 1967 as<br />

one <strong>of</strong> four institutes comprising <strong>the</strong> Science Research Center at Pushchino. It<br />

conducts research on protein structure and <strong>the</strong> biosyn<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>of</strong> polypeptide chains.<br />

Since 1974, Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Protein Biosyn<strong>the</strong>sis Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Protein Research<br />

Institute. His works are in <strong>the</strong> biochemistry <strong>of</strong> nucleic acids and <strong>the</strong> biosyn<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>of</strong><br />

Tarchevskii, Igor A., D. Bio S. Born in 1931. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> Physical and<br />

Chemical Biology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RAS since 1981, and academician since<br />

December 1987. Since 1976, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Biology Institute at<br />

Kazan' , that is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy's Kazan' affiliate. Established in 1945,<br />

<strong>the</strong> institute studies <strong>the</strong> natural resources <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tatar Au<strong>to</strong>nomous Republic.<br />

Geochemistry, Geophysics, and Chemistry <strong>of</strong> Physiologically Active Compounds<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> in 1993. Since 1979, he has headed <strong>the</strong> Extra<br />

chromosomal Heredity <strong>of</strong> Microorganisms Department and within that he has led<br />

research in <strong>the</strong> Plasmid Biology Labora<strong>to</strong>ry. studies <strong>the</strong> proliferation, functional<br />

significance, <strong>the</strong> classification, and <strong>the</strong> structure and evolution <strong>of</strong> Gram-negative<br />

bacterial plasmids, mostly <strong>of</strong> fluorescent pseudomonads. Scientists under his<br />

direction study <strong>the</strong> genetics <strong>of</strong> microbial degradation <strong>of</strong> organic compounds and <strong>the</strong><br />

genetics <strong>of</strong> cellulose biodegradation. They also investigate <strong>the</strong> genetics and<br />

physiology <strong>of</strong> rhizospheric pseudomonads with <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> increasing crop yields.<br />

Since 1988, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Biochemistry and Physiology <strong>of</strong><br />

Microorganisms Institute in Puschino, which was established in 1964 and is<br />

subordinate <strong>to</strong> Physical and Chemical Biology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />
