Laverov, Nikolai P. Born in 1930. Corresponding member since 1979. Academician<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> national<br />

academy since December 1987. Since 1987, he has been President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Kirghizstan <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. He was named vice-President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> for <strong>the</strong> Earth <strong>Sciences</strong> Section in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber, 1988. Since 1990,<br />

he has been <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology <strong>of</strong> Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy<br />

and Geochemistry Institute in Moscow. That institute is now named <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Mining Formations Geology, Petrography, Mineralogy and Geochemistry (IGEM)<br />

Retrospect: This institute is <strong>the</strong> leading exploration institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> oil industry. It<br />

was founded in 1934. The institute is jointly subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ministry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oil<br />

and Gas Industry and <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. Scientific personnel in<br />

<strong>the</strong> institute <strong>to</strong>taled more than 400 in 1992, including 32 with doc<strong>to</strong>ral degrees and<br />

146 with candidate degrees. These scientists work in three major areas <strong>of</strong> research:<br />

1) <strong>the</strong> determination <strong>of</strong> potential reserves <strong>of</strong> oil and gas, <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> plans<br />

for producing oil and gas, and <strong>the</strong> projection <strong>of</strong> future production in Russia, 2) <strong>the</strong><br />

development <strong>of</strong> new and utilization <strong>of</strong> present methods <strong>of</strong> oil and gas exploration,<br />

and 3) <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> oil and gas, and <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> methods and<br />

criteria for <strong>the</strong> estimation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> petroleum and gas potential <strong>of</strong> sedimentary basins.<br />
