Department for Scientific information<br />

Head T. A. Terekhova, Cand. Sci. Biol..<br />

Staff numbers 16. The department includes groups for scientific information, translation,<br />

editing and publishing, copying and pho<strong>to</strong>graphy. The main objectives <strong>of</strong> this<br />

Department are <strong>the</strong> provision information for <strong>the</strong> Institute's scientists, and <strong>the</strong><br />

dissemination <strong>of</strong> information about <strong>the</strong> Institute at home and abroad; <strong>the</strong> world-wide<br />

exchange <strong>of</strong> publications with marine biological institution; organization <strong>of</strong><br />

scientific conferences and meetings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Specialized Dissertation Councils, etc.<br />

Maritime service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute is headed by Stanislav D. Oleyinic. Surveys within <strong>the</strong><br />

Peter <strong>the</strong> Great Bay are conducted aboard <strong>the</strong> research vessels "Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Nasonov" and "Vnimatelny". The research vessel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Research Fleet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

FEB RAS "Akademik Aleksandr Nesmeianov" or "Academik Oparin", are used<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Institute for far expeditions.<br />

Diving Service (headed by Iurii P. Popov) performs <strong>the</strong> years-round sampling for<br />

research and participates in hydrobiological surveys during expeditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Institute at all latitudes from Chukotka, tropical waters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pacific and Indian<br />

Oceans.<br />

Aquarial group (headed by Vik<strong>to</strong>r P. Naidenko) helps experimental work that requires<br />

maintaining marine organisms in aquaria. In <strong>the</strong> building <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute and at <strong>the</strong><br />

Vos<strong>to</strong>k station <strong>the</strong>re are aquaria <strong>of</strong> varied capacity (10 <strong>to</strong> 1000 liters), some being<br />

provided with bi<strong>of</strong>ilters; seawater supply system and bi<strong>of</strong>ilter in aeration system<br />

operate continuously.<br />

11. Marine Geology and Geophysics Institute in Novo Aleksandrovsk.<br />

Sergeev, Konstantin F., D. GM. S. Born in 1931. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Far Eastern Department since 1979. Since 1977, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Marine Geology and Geophysics Institute (formerly <strong>the</strong> Complex Scientific<br />

Research Institute--Sakhalin) in Novo Aleksandrovsk that is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far<br />

Eastern Department and that does research in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> oceanography and<br />

geophysics, including seismology, hydro-acoustics, and <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> tidal waves.<br />
