and began work at <strong>the</strong> institute in 1967 in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> syn<strong>the</strong>sis and properties<br />

<strong>of</strong> polyalkylated phenols; Vik<strong>to</strong>r S. Kobrin, C. Chem. S.; he graduated from <strong>the</strong><br />

Mendeleev Moscow Chemical-Technological Institute in 1959 going <strong>to</strong> work at <strong>the</strong><br />

institute upon graduation, and Gennadii I. Shchukin, C. Chem. S.; he graduated<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk in 1974 and joined <strong>the</strong> institute in 1975 and has led <strong>the</strong> work<br />

Fomin, Vasilii M., D. PM. S. Born in 1940. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong><br />

in 1993. Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Institute in<br />

Novosibirsk since 1979, and he has been head <strong>of</strong> it since 1992. That institute<br />

studies physical gas dynamics, combustion kinetics, hypersonic aerodynamics,<br />

shockwave processes, magne<strong>to</strong>- hydrodynamics, and measurement techniques for<br />

gas flows.<br />

Established in 1957. Dr. Nikolai A. Zheltukhin, corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> is on its staff. It also develops lasers for Soviet industry. Dr.<br />

Vasilii M. Fomin, D. PM. S. has headed <strong>the</strong> institute since 1992; from 1957 <strong>to</strong><br />

1965, <strong>the</strong> institute was headed by S. A. Khristianovich; from 1965 <strong>to</strong> 1966, by M.<br />

F. Shukov; and from 1966 <strong>to</strong> 1971, by academician V. V. Struminskii; from 1971<br />

<strong>to</strong> 1976, by corresponding member R. I. Soloukhin; from 1976 <strong>to</strong> 1984, by<br />

academician I. I. Ianenko. Vik<strong>to</strong>r G. Dulov, D. PM. S., was Direc<strong>to</strong>r from 1984-<br />

1992. The Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>rs for scientific work are Ana<strong>to</strong>lii M. Chari<strong>to</strong>nov, D.<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (1997 Update)<br />

The Institute <strong>of</strong> Theoretical and Applied Mechanics <strong>of</strong> Siberian Branch <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> (ITAM SB RAS) was founded in<br />

1957. On July 21 S. A. Khristianovich was appointed <strong>the</strong> first<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> ITAM and approved <strong>the</strong> main scientific directions: highspeed<br />

aerodynamics; combustion, kinetics and turbulence; strength <strong>of</strong><br />

materials and constructions; mechanics <strong>of</strong> soils and rocks as applied<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> mining art problems. Afterwards <strong>the</strong> Institute was headed by<br />
