Roshchevskii, Mikhail P. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physiology Department <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department since 1987;<br />

academician in 1993. He became Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Komi Scientific Center in<br />

February 1984. He was named a Deputy Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department in<br />

August 1988.<br />

Sadovskii, Mikhail A., D. Tech. S. Born in 1904 in St. Petersburg. <strong>Russian</strong><br />

physicist. Corresponding member, 1953, and academician, 1966. Since 1970,<br />

academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physical Chemistry and Technology <strong>of</strong> Inorganic Materials<br />

Department, and since 1970, an academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RAS.<br />

He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1930. From 1932 <strong>to</strong><br />

1941, he worked at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Seismology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> and from 1941 <strong>to</strong><br />

1944, in <strong>the</strong> special projects section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. He was<br />

Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Chemical Physics from 1946 <strong>to</strong> 1963. From<br />

1963 <strong>to</strong> August 1988, he was Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> O. Iurii Shmidt Earth Physics Institute<br />

that was established in 1956 and that is <strong>the</strong> leading center for <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong><br />

earthquakes and o<strong>the</strong>r seismic phenomena. It is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>'s<br />

Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Department. He was originally elected <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Earth <strong>Sciences</strong> Department. In 1985, he was awarded <strong>the</strong> Lomonosov Medal for<br />

his work in geophysics and geology. His works are in <strong>the</strong> problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory<br />

<strong>of</strong> explosions, <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> destructive action <strong>of</strong> explosions, and <strong>the</strong> seismic<br />

effects <strong>of</strong> large-scale explosions. He substantiated <strong>the</strong> law <strong>of</strong> similarity for<br />

explosions. He participated in large-scale, directional blasting in Russia and is one<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> founders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> science <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> physics <strong>of</strong> explosions. He received <strong>the</strong> State<br />

Prize in 1948, 1949, 1951, and 1953; and <strong>the</strong> Lenin Prize in 1962. In 1986, he received<br />

<strong>the</strong> M. V. Lomonosov Gold Medal for his contributions <strong>to</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> Science.<br />

Shveykin, Gennadii P., D. Tech S. Born in 1926 in <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Karabash, Cheliabinsk<br />

(chelyabinsk) Oblast. <strong>Russian</strong> chemist. Corresponding member, 1976, and academician,<br />

1987. He is also a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department. He graduated from<br />

<strong>the</strong> S. M. Kirov Urals Polytechnical Institute in 1951 and joined <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Chemistry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals branch (now Department) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. Since 1972, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chemistry Institute<br />

in Ekaterinburg (Sverdlovsk). The Institute <strong>of</strong> Chemistry, established in 1958, does<br />

research in high temperature syn<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>of</strong> pure refrac<strong>to</strong>ry combinations and polymer<br />

chemistry. His work deals with <strong>the</strong> chemistry <strong>of</strong> refrac<strong>to</strong>ry metals and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

Tolstikov, Genrikh A., D. Chem S. Born in 1933. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General and<br />

Technical Chemistry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR from 1987, and first Deputy<br />

Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department since 1988. Since 1977, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Chemistry Institute in Ufa. Established in 1960, it studies <strong>the</strong> methods <strong>of</strong><br />

processing sulfur crudes in<strong>to</strong> fuels. He has served as Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bashkir<br />

Affiliate since 1984. (See above.)<br />

Va<strong>to</strong>lin, Nikolai A., D. Tech. S. Born in 1926. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physical Chemistry<br />

and Technology <strong>of</strong> Inorganic Materials Department and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department<br />

since 1981. Since 1967, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Metallurgy Institute at<br />

Ekaterinburg (Sverdlovsk) that is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy's Urals Department.<br />

The institute develops physical-chemical fundamentals for new metallurgical<br />

processes. From 1980 <strong>to</strong> 1988, he served as Deputy Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals<br />

Department.<br />

Vonsovskii, Sergei V., D. PM. S. Born in August 1910 in Tashkent. <strong>Russian</strong><br />

physicist. He has been a corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy since 1953 and an<br />

academician since 1966--<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Physics and Astronomy Department. He<br />

was originally elected <strong>to</strong> General and Applied Physics Department. He graduated<br />

from Leningrad State <strong>University</strong> in 1932 and from 1932 <strong>to</strong> 1939 he worked at <strong>the</strong><br />
