In 1992, <strong>the</strong> Scientific Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> center was Larisa D. Bazarova, C. Geol. S. The<br />

Irkutsk Eastern Siberian Branch was organized in 1949. In 1992, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficially recognized it as <strong>the</strong> Irkutsk Scientific Center. The <strong>to</strong>tal<br />

personnel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> center was 5254 persons <strong>of</strong> whom 1696 were research scientists<br />

and <strong>of</strong> whom 129 held <strong>the</strong> doc<strong>to</strong>rate and 845 <strong>the</strong> candidate degree. Three<br />

academicians and nine corresponding members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Sciences</strong> worked in institutes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> center. The Center has under its jurisdiction 13<br />

major scientific units including independent research institutes, one department <strong>of</strong> a<br />

Novosibirsk institute, and a widespread Pilot Plant for <strong>the</strong> collection <strong>of</strong> scientific<br />

information at astrophysical observa<strong>to</strong>ries, geographic stations, and seismic<br />

stations. Institute scientists work closely with <strong>the</strong> higher educational institution, <strong>the</strong><br />

industrial scientific research centers, and <strong>the</strong> design institutes in <strong>the</strong> region. The<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Economics and Industrial Engineering in Novosibirsk maintains a<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Regional Economics and Deployment <strong>of</strong> Productive Forces <strong>of</strong><br />

Eastern Siberia in Irkutsk for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> developing approaches <strong>to</strong> and methods<br />

<strong>of</strong> building long range regional development programs, particularly in areas such as<br />

Angara-Yenisei, <strong>the</strong> Baikal-Amur Railway, <strong>the</strong> Irkutsk, Bratsk-Ust-Ilimsk, and <strong>the</strong><br />

Verkhne-Lensk Terri<strong>to</strong>rial Production Complexes, and o<strong>the</strong>r regional productive<br />

Zherebtsov, Gelii A., D. PM. S. Born in 1938. Atmospheric Physicist. Specialist in<br />

atmospheric physics, solar-terrestrial radiation physics. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics, and Geography Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN<br />

SSSR from 1990. Author <strong>of</strong> eight scientific works and co-author <strong>of</strong> 130. Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere, and Radio Wave Propagation Institute in<br />

Irkutsk. He was on <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council on widespread radiation and “Sun--<br />

Earth” <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR; head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council on Cosmic-physical<br />

Research <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy, and on <strong>the</strong> Coordinating<br />

Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ministry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Radio Industry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet Union. In 1990, <strong>the</strong><br />

Siberian Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> established <strong>the</strong> Siberian<br />

Center <strong>of</strong> Solar-Terrestrial Physics in Siberia--a new international research center<br />

that combined <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> scientists in two major institutes: <strong>the</strong> Terrestrial<br />

Magnetism, Ionosphere and Radio Wave Propagation Institute in Irkutsk and <strong>the</strong><br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Cosmophysical Research and Aeronomy in Yakutsk in <strong>the</strong> establishment<br />

<strong>of</strong> this new international thrust. As Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Institute <strong>of</strong> Terrestrial<br />

Magnetism, Ionosphere and Radio Wave Propagation, Dr. Zherebetsov will play a<br />

large role in <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> this new international research center.<br />
