Main industries in Chita Region (its area is 431 thousand sq.km, and <strong>the</strong> population 1385<br />

thousand people) are mining industry and deep processing <strong>of</strong> raw materials,<br />

namely, gold, fluorites, molybdenum, tungsten and forest. So far <strong>the</strong> giant<br />

Udokan copper deposit is not used industrially. Animal husbandry farming is <strong>the</strong><br />

main branch <strong>of</strong> agriculture.<br />

The Chita Institute <strong>of</strong> Natural Resources was founded in 1981 by personnel from <strong>the</strong> Chita<br />

departments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Geography, <strong>the</strong> V. N. Sukachev Institute <strong>of</strong> Wood<br />

and Forestry, <strong>the</strong> Limnological Institute, <strong>the</strong> Computing Center, <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Mining and <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Geology and Geophysics--all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department<br />

and located in Krasnoyarsk. Institute scientists study <strong>the</strong> laws <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> formation and<br />

distribution <strong>of</strong> mineral deposits in <strong>the</strong> Eastern Trans-Baikal zone, conduct<br />

economic-geographical investigations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> area, and study <strong>the</strong> problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

exploitation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> copper ores <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Udokan deposits. Direc<strong>to</strong>r Fedor P.<br />

Krendelev, D. GM. S. has been a corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR from<br />

1984. In 1992, Aleksandr P. Chechel’, C. GM. S. was Scientific Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
