academy <strong>of</strong> sciences since 1969 and a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GDR Republic <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Naturalists since 1966. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kiev in 1946 and from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Kiev Medical Institute in 1949. He became Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Animal<br />

Physiology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kiev in 1956. In 1958, he became Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

division <strong>of</strong> general physiology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nervous system that he had organized at <strong>the</strong><br />

A. A. Bogomolets Institute <strong>of</strong> Physiology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ukrainian AN SSR. Since 1966,<br />

he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> that Institute in Kiev. Established in 1953, <strong>the</strong> institute does<br />

research on basic and applied problems <strong>of</strong> physiology. His works have included<br />

work on cellular mechanism <strong>of</strong> nervous activity. He was <strong>the</strong> first in Russia <strong>to</strong> use<br />

microelectrodes in <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> nerve cells. He was awarded <strong>the</strong> I. P. Pavlov Prize<br />

in 1962. Since 1970, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Experimental Medical Institute in<br />

St. Petersburg. In 1977, he received <strong>the</strong> I. M. Sechenov Prize for his work. He<br />

was awarded <strong>the</strong> A. A. Bogomol’ts Prize in Physiology and Theoretical Medicine<br />

in 1987. He is currently a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bureau governing body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

Na<strong>to</strong>chin, Iurii V., D. Bio. S. Born in 1932. In 1980, he received <strong>the</strong> L. A. Orbeli<br />

Prize in physiology for his research. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physiology<br />

Department since December 1987; Academician in 1993. He is currently a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bureau governing body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physiology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

Petrovskii, Boris V., D. Med. S. Born in 1908 in Essentuki. <strong>Russian</strong> surgeon and<br />

public figure and organizer <strong>of</strong> public health care. He was a candidate member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Central Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CPSU. Since 1957, academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Clinical Medical<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medical <strong>Sciences</strong>. Academician since 1966. He<br />

graduated from <strong>the</strong> medical faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> First Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1930.<br />

From 1941 <strong>to</strong> 1944, during WWII, he was Head surgeon <strong>of</strong> evacuation hospitals at<br />

<strong>the</strong> front. He was a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subdepartment <strong>of</strong> general surgery at <strong>the</strong> Second<br />

Moscow Medical Institute in 1948 and 1949 and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subdepartment <strong>of</strong> stationary<br />

surgery at <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Budapest from 1949 <strong>to</strong> 1951. Beginning in 1956, he<br />

was Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Stationary Surgery at <strong>the</strong> First Moscow Medical<br />

Institute and since 1963, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Surgery Research Center in<br />

Moscow. In 1965 he was appointed Minister <strong>of</strong> Public Health <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR Since<br />

1977, he has been a board member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Assembly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GKNT. His<br />

work is in <strong>the</strong> treatment <strong>of</strong> cancers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> esophagus and congenital and acquired<br />

defects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heart. Recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Prize, 1971; Lenin Prize, 1960. (GSE<br />

Roshchevskii, Mikhail P. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physiology Department <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department since December<br />

1987; academician in 1993. He became Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Komi Scientific Center in<br />

February 1984. He was named a Deputy Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department in<br />

August 1988.<br />

Shumakov, Valerii I., D. Med. S. Born in 1931. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physiology<br />

Department in 1993. He has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Transplants and Artificial Organs<br />

Scientific Research Institute in Moscow since 1974. The institute is developing an<br />

artificial heart and o<strong>the</strong>r organ and tissue transplants.<br />

Simonov, Pavel V., D. Med. S. Born in 1926. Academician Secretary <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Physiology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1988. Corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physiology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1981; academician<br />

since 1987. From 1961 <strong>to</strong> 1983 he was Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r and since 1983, he has<br />

been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Higher Nervous Activity and Neurophysiology Institute in<br />

Moscow that was created in 1961 <strong>to</strong> research <strong>the</strong> general, comparative, and<br />

pathological physiology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nervous system--including <strong>the</strong> physiology and<br />

morphology <strong>of</strong> Pavlovian conditioning and inhibition. The institute is subordinate<br />
