is one (1967). He teaches at <strong>the</strong> Buriat State Pedagogical Institute imeni Dorzhi<br />

Banzarova where he has guided <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> three aspirants for <strong>the</strong> candidate<br />

degree. He was on <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council on folklore <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR and a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coordination council for <strong>the</strong> comparative study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> and<br />

American cultures. In 1991, a new International Research Center for Nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

Terri<strong>to</strong>ries Development in Siberia was established that links <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong><br />

scientists <strong>of</strong> three Siberian Department Institutes: <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Cryoshpere <strong>of</strong><br />

Earth in Tiumen, <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Physico-Engineering Problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> North in<br />

Yakutsk, and <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Philology in Akademgorodok-Novosibirsk. As<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Philology in Akademgorodok-Novosibirsk, Dr.<br />

Sok<strong>to</strong>yev will play a major role in <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> this new international<br />

research center.<br />

The Institute was organized in 1991 from <strong>the</strong> former Institute <strong>of</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry, Philology, and<br />

Philosophy. In <strong>the</strong> 1990s, <strong>the</strong> institute joined with <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physico-<br />

Engineering Problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> North under corresponding member Larionov, and<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Cryology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earth Institute under corresponding member Melnikov in<br />

Tiumen <strong>to</strong> form a new International research Center for Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Terri<strong>to</strong>ries<br />

Development in Siberia. The center will use organizations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yakutsk and <strong>the</strong><br />

Tiumen Scientific Centers in new collaborative research efforts on problems <strong>of</strong><br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Siberia. Its research thrusts include: <strong>the</strong> typological study <strong>of</strong> phonetics,<br />

grammar and syntactical analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> linguistics in <strong>the</strong> Urals region. Some<br />

persons involved in <strong>the</strong>se studies include V. A. Avrorin, V. M. Nadeliaev, E. I.<br />

Ubria<strong>to</strong>va, and M. I. Cheremisina. The institute is involved in a heavy publishing<br />

program.<br />

20. The Boreskov Institute <strong>of</strong> Catalysis in Akademgorodok.<br />

Established in 1958. From 1958 <strong>to</strong> 1986, <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute was corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR G. K. Boreskov. Since 1986, <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r has been<br />

The Boreskov Institute <strong>of</strong> Catalysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Sciences</strong> is a largest in <strong>the</strong> world specialized institute working in this field. The<br />

Institute carries out fundamental and applied studies practically in all field <strong>of</strong><br />

catalysis: structural and mechanistic characterization at <strong>the</strong> molecular level <strong>of</strong><br />

various catalysts and catalytic reactions, chemistry <strong>of</strong> catalyst preparation, kinetic<br />

stadies <strong>of</strong> catalytic processes, ma<strong>the</strong>matical modeling and engineering <strong>of</strong> catalytic<br />
