Direc<strong>to</strong>rs or associate Direc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> major scientific research labora<strong>to</strong>ries and two are<br />

heads <strong>of</strong> major divisions <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institutes. Three members were elevated<br />

because <strong>of</strong> age <strong>to</strong> advisory status <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> national academy Presidium.<br />

Academicians--age analysis: The average age <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 18 academicians <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nuclear<br />

Physics Department in 1991 was 76.4 years--<strong>the</strong> oldest member being 99 years old,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> youngest 55. The Universities and Institutes producing 15 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 18<br />

academicians <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nuclear Physics Department included: <strong>the</strong> Moscow State<br />

<strong>University</strong> with 9, and <strong>the</strong> remaining six graduated from six different universities or<br />

institutes. These include <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Petrograd in St. Petersburg from which<br />

<strong>the</strong> oldest member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department (99) graduated, <strong>the</strong> Moscow Physical<br />

Engineering Institute, <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Voronezh, <strong>the</strong> Leningrad Polytechnic<br />

Institute, Leningrad State <strong>University</strong>, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Rome. The three<br />

academicians whose institutions are not known at present all hold <strong>the</strong> doc<strong>to</strong>ral degree.<br />

Corresponding Members--age analysis: The average age <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 24 corresponding<br />

members whose birth dates are available was 67 years in 1991. The oldest was 81<br />

and <strong>the</strong> youngest was 46 years old. Only two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 27 corresponding members <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Nuclear Physics Department appear <strong>to</strong> hold no degrees. Of <strong>the</strong> 25 remaining <strong>the</strong><br />

institutions from which 14 <strong>of</strong> those graduated is known and includes: Moscow<br />

State <strong>University</strong> with five graduates, Leningrad State <strong>University</strong> with five<br />

graduates, <strong>the</strong> Leningrad Polytechnic Institute with two, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Lvov, and <strong>the</strong> Moscow Physics and Engineering Institute each graduated one.<br />

Period <strong>of</strong> Greatest Growth: The greatest growth in numbers <strong>of</strong> scientists during <strong>the</strong><br />

1970s was in <strong>the</strong> Nuclear Research Institute in Moscow, as Figure 15 shows:<br />

Note: These Institutes were split <strong>of</strong>f from <strong>the</strong> I<strong>of</strong>fe and <strong>the</strong> Lebedev Physics<br />

Institute in 1971 and transferred <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> jurisdiction and control <strong>of</strong> this new<br />

department. In <strong>the</strong> Nuclear Research Institute in Moscow, <strong>the</strong> personnel included 37<br />

senior department and sub-department heads and 10 senior researchers and 44<br />

junior researchers. In <strong>the</strong> Leningrad institute, 40 senior department and<br />

sub-department heads and senior researchers and 23 junior researchers.<br />
