working out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> physical principles and development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> concrete<br />

designs <strong>of</strong> technical heavy-current superconducting materials;<br />

development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> methods and instrumentation for studying and<br />

control <strong>of</strong> technical superconduc<strong>to</strong>rs including those <strong>to</strong> be used at<br />

industrial enterprises;<br />

development <strong>of</strong> superconducting magnetic systems both for scientific and<br />

applied research. Usually development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> superconducting magnet is<br />

carried out simultaneously with designing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> relevant cryogenic,<br />

electrotechnical, and diagnostic systems.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r trend in <strong>the</strong> applied research is <strong>the</strong> works on <strong>the</strong> physics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> linear electron<br />

accelera<strong>to</strong>rs (LEA) and applied nuclear physics using <strong>the</strong> linear accelera<strong>to</strong>r beams<br />

(electron, gamma, and neutron) aimed at <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> technologies for<br />

science, medicine, industry.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> framework <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> applied research carried out at <strong>the</strong> Division a new trend <strong>of</strong> works<br />

has been recently formed, using <strong>the</strong> method for intensification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heat- and<br />

mass-exchange. The results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se works indicate <strong>the</strong> real possibilities <strong>of</strong><br />

essential enhancement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> functional and economic efficiency <strong>of</strong> a wide<br />

spectrum <strong>of</strong> energy-generation and energy-conversion devices both in science and<br />

industry.<br />

applying <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> hydrogen as an ecologically clean fuel for use in industry and<br />

<strong>the</strong> generation <strong>of</strong> nuclear power.]<br />

One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p-priority tasks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present is a radical ecological reorganization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

industry and nuclear power. A most general method <strong>of</strong> solving this problem<br />

consists in a wide application <strong>of</strong> hydrogen which is in fact <strong>the</strong> only ecologically<br />

clean fuel.<br />

Formation <strong>of</strong> a new subject occurred at <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> seventies and passed two stages:<br />

first, research in basic plasma chemistry and formulation <strong>of</strong> applications, second,<br />

hydrogen power (or " nuclear hydrogen power"). Hydrogen power also passed<br />

two stages <strong>of</strong> development: <strong>the</strong> first "economic" stage when a catastrophe due <strong>to</strong><br />

depletion <strong>of</strong> world power resources (oil, gas) was considered real, and <strong>the</strong> second "<br />
