Koroteev, Vik<strong>to</strong>r A., C. GM. S. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology,<br />

Geochemistry, Geophysics and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals<br />

Department since December 1987; academician since 1993. Since 1975, he has<br />

been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> V. I. Lenin Ilmenskii State Reserve in Miass in Cheliabinsk<br />

Oblast. This organization was established in 1920 <strong>to</strong> conduct geological and<br />

biological research in <strong>the</strong> forests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Urals Mountains. Deputy<br />

Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department since August 1988.<br />

Kropotkin, Petr. N., D. GM. S. Born in 1910 in Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong> geologist.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining<br />

<strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1966; academician in 1993. Originally<br />

elected <strong>to</strong> Earth <strong>Sciences</strong> Department. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> S. Ordzhonikidze<br />

Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute in 1932. Since 1959, he has headed <strong>the</strong><br />

Tec<strong>to</strong>nics and Geophysics Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geological Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. His main work is in <strong>the</strong> regional geology <strong>of</strong> Kazakhstan and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Far East, and geotec<strong>to</strong>nics. (GSE 13, p. 520.)<br />

Kurlenia, Mikhail V., D. Tech. S. Born in 1931. Engineer. Specialist in mining<br />

mechanics. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry,<br />

and Mining Department and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department since December 1987, and<br />

academician since 1990. He has written 24 scientific works and co-authored 105<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs. He has 95 inventions and <strong>of</strong> his scientific writings, seven are major monographs--all<br />

on aspects <strong>of</strong> mining. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Tomsk Polytechnical<br />

Institute Imeni S. M. Kirov in 1953 and worked <strong>the</strong>re until 1960. In 1960, he<br />

joined <strong>the</strong> Mining Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department in Novosibirsk where, in<br />

turn, he was a senior researcher, Head <strong>of</strong> a labora<strong>to</strong>ry and a Department, and in<br />

1988, he was named Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> that institute. He became a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Presidium in that year. He has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor since 1986. He has supervised <strong>the</strong><br />

work <strong>of</strong> two doc<strong>to</strong>ral and 16 candidate aspirants. He edits a mining journal. He is a<br />

holder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Badge <strong>of</strong> Honor and medals for his work.<br />

Laverov, Nikolai P. Born in 1930. Corresponding member since 1979. Academician<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> national<br />

academy since December 1987. Since 1987, he has been President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Kirghizstan <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. He was named Vice President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> for <strong>the</strong> Earth <strong>Sciences</strong> Section in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber, 1988. Since 1990,<br />

he has been <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology <strong>of</strong> Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy<br />

and Geochemistry Institute in Moscow. The new institute does ore and mineral<br />

analyses and develops new methods and <strong>to</strong>ols for analysis.<br />

Letnikov, Feliks A., D. GM. S. Born in 1934. Geologist. Specialist in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong><br />

geology, geochemistry and petrological processes forming <strong>the</strong> earth’s crust.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining<br />

Department and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department since December 1987, and academician<br />

since 1992. He has authored and co-authored 230 works <strong>of</strong> which 15 are monographic<br />

in length and substance. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> All-Union Correspondence<br />

Polytechnical Institute in 1961. He served on geological expeditions from 1957 <strong>to</strong><br />

1965. In 1965, he headed a labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> experimental and <strong>the</strong>oretical petrology,<br />

and in 1980 he was named Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earth’s Crust Institute in Irkutsk.<br />

He has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor since 1978, holding <strong>the</strong> chair in mineralogy and petrology<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Irkutsk State <strong>University</strong>. He has directed <strong>the</strong> research <strong>of</strong> three doc<strong>to</strong>ral<br />

students and 23 aspirants for <strong>the</strong> candidate degree. He is on <strong>the</strong> commission on<br />

experimental mineralogy and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> commission on metasoma<strong>to</strong>sis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. He is a member <strong>of</strong> group participating in <strong>the</strong><br />

program “Lithosphere” and “Cybernetic Geodynamics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earth’s Crust.” He is<br />

edi<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> journal “Geology and Geophysics.”<br />
