Academicians--age and schools: The birth dates <strong>of</strong> nine <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 11 academicians <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Far Eastern Department are known. Two academicians were in <strong>the</strong>ir 80s, one in his<br />

70s, and <strong>the</strong> average age <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r six whose birth dates is known was 64 years<br />

in 1991. Institutions graduating seven <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 11 academicians are known and<br />

include: <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Gorkiy, <strong>the</strong> Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k Pedagogical Institute, Moscow<br />

State <strong>University</strong>, Leningrad State <strong>University</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Leningrad Institute <strong>of</strong> Mines, <strong>the</strong><br />

Leningrad Polytechnic Institute, and <strong>the</strong> F. E. Dzerzhinskii Artillery <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

Each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se institutions graduated one academician. Of <strong>the</strong> 11 academicians,<br />

seven were Direc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> scientific research institutes and three were Deputy<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> institutes. Again, <strong>the</strong> administrative role <strong>of</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> scientists in<br />

heading labora<strong>to</strong>ries or research institutes stands out. One was Vice President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

AN SSSR, and two o<strong>the</strong>rs were on <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Sciences</strong>. Four held <strong>the</strong>ir principal membership in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 18 subject-matter<br />

departments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>.<br />

Corresponding Members--age and schools: The birth dates <strong>of</strong> 15 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 23<br />

corresponding members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department are known. Three <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />

were in <strong>the</strong>ir 80s, and <strong>the</strong> average age <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> remaining 12 whose birth dates are<br />

known was 61 years in 1991. Again, as in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department, a<br />

lower average age <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong> this geographic department is observed. Fourteen<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 23 corresponding members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department had <strong>the</strong>ir principal<br />

memberships in six <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subject-matter departments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Sciences</strong>--with <strong>the</strong> predominant number (seven) holding <strong>the</strong>ir membership in <strong>the</strong><br />

Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department. O<strong>the</strong>r joint<br />

memberships were with <strong>the</strong> Mechanics and Control Processes Department, <strong>the</strong><br />

Economics Department, <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry Department, <strong>the</strong> Oceanology, Atmospheric<br />

Physics, and Geography Department, and <strong>the</strong> General Biology Department is ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

accurate reflection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> research emphasis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department and <strong>of</strong><br />

its scientific research institutes. In fact, ten <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> corresponding members were or<br />

had been Direc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> research institutes located in <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern regions, one was<br />

a Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r, and one was Chairman <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> national scientific councils,<br />

which is an important position in <strong>the</strong> directing <strong>of</strong> scientific research in Russia. The<br />

educational background <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> corresponding members is diverse, although <strong>the</strong><br />

institutions graduating <strong>the</strong> corresponding members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> department is known in<br />

<strong>the</strong> cases <strong>of</strong> only eight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 23 corresponding members. Three <strong>of</strong> those graduated<br />

from Moscow State <strong>University</strong>; one from Leningrad State <strong>University</strong>; one from <strong>the</strong><br />

Middle Asian Geological Exploration Institute in Tashkent; one from <strong>the</strong> A. N.<br />

Krylov Naval <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Naval Architecture and Armaments, one from <strong>the</strong> Far<br />

Eastern Agricultural Institute, and one from <strong>the</strong> Leningrad Veterinary Institute.<br />

Chairman:<br />

Il'ichev, Vik<strong>to</strong>r I. Born in 1932 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Tikhonovo, Vladimir Oblast. <strong>Russian</strong><br />

hydrologist and hydroacoustics specialist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics, and Geography Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR<br />

from 1976, and, academician since 1981. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Gorkiy in 1955. Between 1955 and 1974 he was on <strong>the</strong> Acoustics Institute staff. In<br />

1974, he became Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pacific Ocean Oceanology Institute in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k<br />

that was established in 1973 <strong>to</strong> study <strong>the</strong> complex hydrophysics <strong>of</strong> water masses,<br />

sea swell, energy exchange, and <strong>the</strong> interactions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ocean. It is subordinate <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> academy's Far Eastern Scientific Center (now an academy Department.) Since<br />

March 1986, he has served as Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

academy. He has been a Vice President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy and on <strong>the</strong> Presidium since<br />

Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1987. His works deal with acoustic and hydrodynamic cavitation, <strong>the</strong><br />

resistance <strong>of</strong> liquids <strong>to</strong> cavitation, and marine hydrology. (GSE 30, p. 440.)<br />
