Baraboshkin, Aleksei N., D. Chem. S. Born in 1925. Corresponding member since<br />

1981, and academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General and Technical Chemistry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department since December <strong>of</strong> 1987. He graduated from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Urals Polytechnical Institute in 1952 where he also did all <strong>of</strong> his graduate work.<br />

He joined <strong>the</strong> institute in 1958. Since 1977, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Electrochemistry Institute in Ekaterinburg (Sverdlovsk). Established in 1958, <strong>the</strong><br />

main research thrusts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute include high-temperature electrochemistry <strong>of</strong><br />

molten salts and solid electrolytes--investigations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir properties and <strong>the</strong><br />

processes in <strong>the</strong>se electrolytes--and <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> new ecologically pure<br />

technologies and devices. He has also headed <strong>the</strong> Electrocrystallization Labora<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute since 1972. He is responsible for new scientific directions involving<br />

<strong>the</strong> electrocrystallization <strong>of</strong> metals out <strong>of</strong> salt melts, <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical foundation <strong>of</strong><br />

galvanoplastics and galvanostegy <strong>of</strong> refrac<strong>to</strong>ry metals and <strong>the</strong>ir alloys, chemistry<br />

and kinetics <strong>of</strong> electrode processes, and methods <strong>of</strong> obtaining single crystals and<br />

epitaxial layers <strong>of</strong> metals.<br />

Bol’shakov, (Bolshakov) Vladimir N., D. Bio. S. Born in 1934. Corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Biology Department and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals department since<br />

1979, and academician <strong>of</strong> both departments since December 1987. Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Zoology Institute in Leningrad from 1971 <strong>to</strong> 1977. Since 1977, he has been<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Plant and AnimaEcology Institute in Ekaterinburg (Sverdlovsk). It<br />

was founded in 1948 and does research in <strong>the</strong> fauna and flora <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Region,<br />

soil science, animal pathology, radiobiology, and car<strong>to</strong>graphy. It is <strong>the</strong> leading<br />

ecological research institute in Russia. In 1986, he was given <strong>the</strong> V. N. Sukachev<br />

Gold Medal named after <strong>the</strong> famed botanist, geographer, and plant scientist for his<br />

own work in botanical research. Institute scientists concentrate upon <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong><br />

pollutants like Strontium 90 and its migration through <strong>the</strong> soil as well as <strong>the</strong> impact<br />

<strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r nuclear wastes upon <strong>the</strong> environment. He is a recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Order <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Red Banner Badge <strong>of</strong> Honor Medal.<br />

Chupakhin, Oleg N., Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Technical Chemistry<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals department since<br />
