In 1991, <strong>the</strong>re were a <strong>to</strong>tal <strong>of</strong> 90 scientists and technicians working in <strong>the</strong> institute, <strong>of</strong><br />

whom five held <strong>the</strong> doc<strong>to</strong>rate and 42 held candidate degrees. From 1945 <strong>to</strong> 1991,<br />

researchers in this institute published some 467 bibliographic items--though a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se were article ra<strong>the</strong>r than monograph length. <strong>Russian</strong> scientists <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

work as a group <strong>of</strong> writers ra<strong>the</strong>r than as individuals. The institute manuscript<br />

holdings consist <strong>of</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> folklore <strong>of</strong> some 182 collection <strong>of</strong> some 306,000<br />

items, and national folklore or Karelians, Veps and Ingermanlanders with 156<br />

collections containing more than 21,000 items. Dr. Iurii A. Savvateev, D. Hist. S.<br />

2. Economics Research Institute in Petrozavodsk. Began as a research group in<br />

1946 under A. V. Ivanov who was Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> economics sec<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Karelian-<br />

Finnish Scientific Research Base <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. Ivanov headed <strong>the</strong> research<br />

group from 1946 <strong>to</strong> 1953 when P. A. Vasil’ev (1953-57) headed it. In 1948, it was<br />

renamed <strong>the</strong> economic sec<strong>to</strong>r and in 1951, <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Economics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Karelian Subdivision <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. In 1958, this sec<strong>to</strong>r was given independent<br />

Department status and put under <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> P. A. Ukhanov (1958-1972).<br />

From 1973 <strong>to</strong> 1974, it was under A. M. Pravdin, from 1974 <strong>to</strong> 1976 under A. I.<br />

Bogachiov, from 1976 <strong>to</strong> 1982 under A. S. Revaikin and from 1983 <strong>to</strong> 1987 under<br />

Sh. Sh. Baibusinov. Since 1987 it has been under Sergei M. Iaskunov, C. Econ.<br />

S., and subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Karelian Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>.<br />

Scientists <strong>of</strong> this Department study <strong>the</strong> economic potential <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> North, focusing<br />

particularly upon <strong>the</strong> forestry industry. The staff numbers 38 researchers <strong>of</strong> whom<br />

one holds <strong>the</strong> doc<strong>to</strong>rate and 19 <strong>the</strong> candidate degree.<br />

Structure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department: <strong>the</strong> Department-Institute is made up <strong>of</strong> seven<br />

departments:<br />

integrated economic problems <strong>of</strong> production;<br />

economic problems <strong>of</strong> management and economic mechanism;<br />

economic problems <strong>of</strong> social infrastructure;<br />

economic problems <strong>of</strong> production infrastructure;<br />

economic-technological problems <strong>of</strong> machine-building and<br />

metallurgy; economics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> agro-industrial complex, and<br />

economics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> forestry complex.<br />

There is also an independent group on <strong>the</strong> economics <strong>of</strong> science. Its scientists also study<br />

labor productivity. Scientists in this institute produced some 81 published studies<br />

from 1945 <strong>to</strong> 1985. O<strong>the</strong>r members <strong>of</strong> this Department include: Sh. Sh.<br />

Baybusinov, A. M. Savin, I. P. Pokrovskaia (aya), S. N. Nokelaynen, V. N.<br />

Bakunovich, and S. M. Yakunov. (See: Ruble, Vol. I., p. 124.)<br />

3. Forestry Institute in Petrozavodsk. Work in forestry began in <strong>the</strong> 1930s in <strong>the</strong><br />

region as a result <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Russian</strong> scientific expedition led by Iurii D. Tsizerlinga and<br />

N. I. Kuznetsova. Ano<strong>the</strong>r AN SSSR expedition was led by S. N. Nedrigailova<br />

and S. P. Uskova. Forestry was established in 1949 as a Department, gaining<br />

institute status in 1957. Institute scientists research <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> nitric fertilizers on<br />

conifers. The Forestry Labora<strong>to</strong>ry was established in 1948. Forestry scientists<br />
