Kotliakov, Vladimir M., D. Geo. S. Born in 1931 in <strong>the</strong> settlement <strong>of</strong> Krasnaia<br />

Poliana, now in <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Lobnia, Moscow Oblast. <strong>Russian</strong> glaciologist.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics, and Geography<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1976, and academician since 1988. He graduated<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> geography at Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1954. In 1968,<br />

he became Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Glaciology Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geography Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN<br />

SSSR in Moscow. Since 1986, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geography Institute in<br />

Moscow. He has been deputy secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department since April 1988. His<br />

works are on glaciology, <strong>the</strong> earth's snow cover, and glaciation in <strong>the</strong> Antarctica,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Caucasus, and <strong>the</strong> Pamirs. In 1961, he founded a series <strong>of</strong> published<br />

collections--Materials on Glaciological Research: A Chronicle <strong>of</strong> Discussion--<strong>of</strong><br />

which he is edi<strong>to</strong>r-in-Head. He is presently a deputy <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Academician Secretary<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Ocean research, Atmospheric Physics and Geography <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
