systems analysis;<br />

management <strong>of</strong> production;<br />

problems <strong>of</strong> terri<strong>to</strong>rial management;<br />

sociopolitical problems, and,<br />

3. His<strong>to</strong>ry, Language and Literature Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bashkir<strong>to</strong>stani<br />

Scientific Center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department in Ufa.<br />

Established in 1951 when <strong>the</strong> Bashkir Subdivision first came in<strong>to</strong> being. From 1964 <strong>to</strong><br />

1967, it was called <strong>the</strong> Ufa Institute <strong>of</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry, Language, and Literature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN<br />

SSSR. Institute Direc<strong>to</strong>rs have included: M. Solianov (1932), G. S. Amantaev<br />

(1933-36), A. M. Tagirov (1936-37), A. N. Usmanov (1938-39), Kh. Kh.<br />

Khamma<strong>to</strong>v (1939-41), Sh. Sh. Baikov (1941-42), A. N. Usmanov (1943-51),<br />

M. Ia. Iangirov (1951-52), Sh. I. Tipeev (1952-55), A. I. Kharisov (1955-63),<br />

Kh. S. Saiaranov (1963-79), and Kh. F. Usmanov (1980-88). Since 1988, <strong>the</strong><br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r has been Dr. Z. G. Uraksin, D. Philolgical S. This institute can claim S. I.<br />

Rudenko whose his<strong>to</strong>rico-ethnographic study republished in 1955 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> peoples <strong>of</strong><br />

Bashkirskaia (aya) ASSR initiated a series <strong>of</strong> significant scholarly contributions<br />

from o<strong>the</strong>r members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute. The institute reported on a series <strong>of</strong> systematic<br />

archeological investigations dating from <strong>the</strong> mid-1950s in Bashkiria. The institute<br />

publishes a journal Arkheologiia i etnografiia Bashkirii. It maintains a major library<br />

with strong holdings in archeology, ethnography and linguistics.<br />

Structure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute: <strong>the</strong> institute is organized in<strong>to</strong> nine departments:<br />

peoples <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Urals region,<br />

archeology,<br />

ethnography,<br />

his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prerevolutionary period,<br />

his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Soviet society,<br />

language,<br />

dialec<strong>to</strong>logy and his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> language,<br />

literature, and folklore and art.<br />

The staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute numbers 88 researchers <strong>of</strong> whom six hold <strong>the</strong> doc<strong>to</strong>rate and 37<br />

hold <strong>the</strong> candidate degree. Dr. Zinnur G. Uraksin, D. Philological S. is <strong>the</strong> current<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute.(See: Ruble, Vol. III., p. 112.)<br />

4. Chemistry Institute in Ufa. Established in 1969 from <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Organic<br />

Chemistry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bashkir Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. The institute<br />
