Institute Imeni S. M. Kirov in 1953 and worked <strong>the</strong>re until 1960. In 1960, he<br />

joined <strong>the</strong> Mining Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department in Novosibirsk where, in<br />

turn, he was a senior researcher, head <strong>of</strong> a labora<strong>to</strong>ry and a Department, and in<br />

1988, he was named Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> that institute. He became a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Presidium in that year. He has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor since 1986. He has supervised <strong>the</strong><br />

work <strong>of</strong> two doc<strong>to</strong>ral and 16 candidate aspirants. He edits a mining journal.<br />

Laverov, Nikolai P. Born in 1930. Corresponding member since 1979. Academician<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> national<br />

academy since December 1987. Since 1987, he has been President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Kirghizstan <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. He was named vice-President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> for <strong>the</strong> Earth <strong>Sciences</strong> Section in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber, 1988. Since 1990,<br />

he has been <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology <strong>of</strong> Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy<br />

and Geochemistry Institute in Moscow.<br />

Logachev, Nikolai A., D. GM. S. Born in 1929. Geologist. Specialist in studies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Geology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Continental Shelf. Corresponding member since 1979, and<br />

academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Department and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Siberian Department since 1984. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Irkutsk State <strong>University</strong> in<br />

1952. He began work upon graduation at <strong>the</strong> Eastern Siberian Branch Geology<br />

Institute that became <strong>the</strong> Earth’s Crust Institute. In 1976 he was named Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

that institute that was established in 1949 and is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy's<br />

Siberian Department. Research at <strong>the</strong> institute includes geology, geophysics, and<br />

seismology. Since 1977, he has served as chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Irkutsk Scientific Center.<br />

He was named <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> in 1980. He<br />

has been a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Geophysical Society since 1984. He was a<br />

delegate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> 26th National Congress. Winner--with o<strong>the</strong>rs--<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1978 State<br />

Prize in Science and Technology for "The His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Relief<br />

<strong>of</strong> Siberia and <strong>the</strong> Far East" 15 Vols. In 1988, he received <strong>the</strong> Soviet Ministerial<br />

Prize. He has also received o<strong>the</strong>r medals and recognitions for his work in scientific<br />

research. (1964-76).<br />

Academician Vladimir Al. Magnitskii, tel. 254-23-35<br />

Magnitskii, Vladimir A. Born in 1915 in Penza. <strong>Russian</strong> geophysicist and specialist in<br />

<strong>the</strong> physics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophys,<br />

Geochemistry, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1964, and<br />

academician since 1979. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Moscow Institute <strong>of</strong> Engineers for<br />

Geodesy, Aerial Pho<strong>to</strong>graphy, and Car<strong>to</strong>graphy in 1940. He taught <strong>the</strong>re from<br />

1940 <strong>to</strong> 1954 and later at Moscow State <strong>University</strong> where he is heads <strong>the</strong><br />

geophysics division. His works deal with <strong>the</strong> structure and processes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth's<br />

Osipov, Vik<strong>to</strong>r I., Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry,<br />

and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since December 1987;<br />

academician in 1993.<br />
