Academicians--age and schools: The average age <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ten academicians <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

department whose birth dates are known was 68 in 1991. Three were born before<br />

1918. Even with <strong>the</strong>se three discounted <strong>the</strong> average age <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> remaining eight was<br />

64. The institutions graduating seven <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 12 academicians <strong>of</strong> this department are<br />

known and include: <strong>the</strong> I. P. Pavlov 1st Leningrad Medical Institute, <strong>the</strong> Gorkiy<br />

Medical Institute, <strong>the</strong> Kiev Medical Institute, <strong>the</strong> 2nd Moscow Medical Institute, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kiev, <strong>the</strong> Moscow State <strong>University</strong>, and <strong>the</strong> Dnepropetrovsk Medical<br />

Institute. One woman is among <strong>the</strong> twelve academicians.<br />

Corresponding Members age and schools: Eleven <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 16 corresponding birth<br />

dates are known, and <strong>the</strong>ir average age in 1991 was 67. Two were in <strong>the</strong>ir 80s, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> youngest was 46. Only four institutions are known from which five <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 16<br />

corresponding members graduated. As in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academicians, however, <strong>of</strong><br />

those whose institutions are known <strong>the</strong> largest majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m graduated from<br />

medical schools with a second largest number graduating from biology departments<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> universities.<br />

Simonov, Pavel V., D. Med. S. Born in 1926. Academician secretary <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physiology<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1988. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Physiology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1981; academician since 1987. From<br />

1961 <strong>to</strong> 1983 he was Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r and since 1983, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Higher Nervous Activity and Neurophysiology Institute in Moscow that was<br />

created in 1961 <strong>to</strong> research <strong>the</strong> general, comparative, and pathological physiology<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nervous system--including <strong>the</strong> physiology and morphology <strong>of</strong> Pavlovian<br />

conditioning and inhibition. The institute is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>'s<br />

Physiology Department. Since 1969, he has been head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physiology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Emotions Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> that Institute. In 1979, he was awarded <strong>the</strong> I. P. Pavlov<br />

Prize in ana<strong>to</strong>my and physiology for his contributions <strong>to</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> Physiology.<br />
