1965, he worked as an edi<strong>to</strong>r, first in Moscow, and <strong>the</strong>n in Prague. From 1965 <strong>to</strong><br />

1968, he was engaged in party work. From 1968 <strong>to</strong> 1977, he was edi<strong>to</strong>r-in-Chief <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> journal Voprosy filos<strong>of</strong>ii. His work is in dialectical materialism, philosophical<br />

problems in contemporary natural science, and <strong>the</strong> social and philosophical problems<br />

Gvishiani, Dzhermen M., D. Phil. S. Born in 1928 in Akhaltsikhe, Georgian SSR.<br />

Philosopher and sociologist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philosophy and Law<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1970, and academician since 1979. He graduated<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Moscow Institute <strong>of</strong> International Relations in 1951. From 1951 <strong>to</strong> 1955,<br />

he served in <strong>the</strong> Soviet navy. In 1955, he began work with <strong>the</strong> State Committee for<br />

New Technology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> Ministers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> former Soviet Union, and in<br />

1965, he became vice-Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GKNT. In 1969, he was made Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Labora<strong>to</strong>ry for Research In<strong>to</strong> Complex Problems <strong>of</strong> Management <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute for<br />

Concrete Social Research <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. He has been Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> governing<br />

Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Vienna since<br />

1972. In <strong>the</strong> 1970s, he was on <strong>the</strong> edi<strong>to</strong>rial council for publications <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Natural Science and Technology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. Since 1977, he<br />

has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> All-Union Systems Research Scientific Research Institute in<br />

Moscow, subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Information <strong>Sciences</strong>, Computer Technology and<br />

Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. He has led research on information<br />

problems--stressing <strong>the</strong> principles <strong>of</strong> managing fundamental science. (GSE 6, p.<br />

Kudriavtsev, Vladimir N., D. Iur. S. Born in 1923 in Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong> iurist. Vice<br />

President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> for <strong>the</strong> Social sciences since 1988. Corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philosophy and Law Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1974; and,<br />

academician since 1984. From 1952 <strong>to</strong> 1960 he taught and researched at <strong>the</strong> V. I.<br />

Lenin Military Political <strong>Academy</strong>. From 1960-63 he was Deputy Chief and Chief <strong>of</strong><br />

organizational inspection division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Military Collegium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Supreme Court <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> former Soviet Union In 1963 he joined <strong>the</strong> All-Union Institute for <strong>the</strong> Study <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Causes <strong>of</strong> Crime and <strong>the</strong> Development <strong>of</strong> Crime Prevention Measures. From<br />

1969 <strong>to</strong> 1973 he was Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> that institute. Since l973, he has served as Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State and Law Institute in Moscow that was established in 1938 and is<br />

Russia's most prestigious and important facility for conducting research on<br />

governmental l, legal and political affairs. Its research directly affects <strong>Russian</strong><br />

legislation. His principal works are on criminal law and criminology. Since l975, he<br />

has been Deputy Chairman <strong>of</strong> Soviet Sociological Association, Moscow. Since<br />

l983, he has served as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet Committee for <strong>the</strong><br />

Defense <strong>of</strong> Peace. Since l985, he has been member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong>. Since 1988, he has been <strong>the</strong> Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philosophy and<br />

Law Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. (GSE 30, p. 536.) (See Academician Secretary<br />

Laptev, Vladimir V. Born in 1924. Corresponding member since 1979. Academician<br />

since December 1987. Member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bureau <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> department.<br />

Osipov, Gennadii V., D. Phil. S. Born in 1929. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Philosophy and Law Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1987; academician in 1993.<br />

In 1991, he was made Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sociopolitical Studies Institute in Moscow<br />

which was organized in 1991. The institute has a staff <strong>of</strong> 109 researchers, 82 <strong>of</strong><br />

whom have advanced postgraduate degrees. Institute structure: The institute is<br />

structured in<strong>to</strong> three centers, two Departments, and four sec<strong>to</strong>rs as follows: Centers:<br />

(1.) <strong>the</strong> center for sociopolitical and methodological problems with sec<strong>to</strong>rs on interethnic<br />

relations, sociology <strong>of</strong> public consciousness, <strong>the</strong> sociology <strong>of</strong> religion, and a<br />
