Iskenderov, Akhmed A., D. Hist. S. Born in 1927. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

His<strong>to</strong>ry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1979. Since 1975, he has been Deputy<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute in Moscow which was established in 1968<br />

when it was split <strong>of</strong>f from <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR Institute. It is a major center for<br />

international studies research.<br />

Kapitsa, Mikhail S. Born in 1921. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry Department <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1987. Since 1987, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oriental Studies<br />

Institute in Moscow which traces its origin back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> founding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Imperial<br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> itself in 1725. In 1724, <strong>the</strong> Tsar's oriental museum<br />

(Kunstkamera) was taken over as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new Imperial <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>.<br />

For a long period oriental studies along with o<strong>the</strong>r arts and humanities were shifted<br />

<strong>to</strong> universities. In 1921, <strong>the</strong> All-Union Scientific Association <strong>of</strong> Oriental Studies<br />

opened in Moscow with branches in <strong>the</strong> Ukraine, Siberia, <strong>the</strong> Caucasus and Central<br />

Asia. In 1930, a new Institute <strong>of</strong> Oriental Studies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> former Soviet Union<br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> was created. Following a period <strong>of</strong> uncertain development in<br />

<strong>the</strong> 1930s and 1940s, <strong>the</strong> institute was reorganized in 1957 becoming for a short<br />

period <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Chinese Studies. Since 1969, <strong>the</strong> Institute has maintained its<br />

present structure and is <strong>the</strong> major Soviet research center for Oriental affairs. The<br />

institute is involved with a wide range <strong>of</strong> disciplines focusing on Oriental studies,<br />

including: his<strong>to</strong>ry, economics, philosophy, philology, and sociology. In 1968, <strong>the</strong><br />

institute numbered some 27 Departments and maintained a division in St.<br />

Petersburg. By 1977, <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Oriental Studies had been reorganized in<strong>to</strong> 15<br />

Departments in Moscow and three in St. Petersburg. Research scientists numbered<br />

653 in 1992, <strong>of</strong> whom 100 held doc<strong>to</strong>ral and 445 held candidate degrees. (LDA 89-<br />

Karakeev, Kurman-Galii K. Born in 1913 in Kurmenty, Kirghiz Oblast. <strong>Russian</strong><br />

his<strong>to</strong>rian. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry Department since 1968. Originally<br />

elected <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>rical <strong>Sciences</strong> department. Academician and president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kirghiz SSR since 1960. Son <strong>of</strong> peasants. He<br />

graduated from <strong>the</strong> Higher Party School in 1946 and from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Social<br />

science in 1959. From 1939 <strong>to</strong> 1959, he was secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tien-Shan and Issyk-<br />

Kul' Oblast Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> party, an edi<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> republic newspaper, <strong>the</strong> Head<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> propaganda and agitation section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CC <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Communist party <strong>of</strong><br />

Kirghiz, and from 1947, he was secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> party's Central Committee. His<br />

fields <strong>of</strong> research are in cultural construction, his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CPSU, and his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> USSR He translated Marxist-Leninist works in<strong>to</strong> Kirghiz. He was a Deputy <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> 6th, 7th, and 8th convocations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Supreme Soviet and he was a delegate <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> 22nd (1961) and 23rd (1966) Congresses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CPSU. (GSE 11, p. 426.)<br />

Kas’ianenko, (Kasianenko) Vasilii I., D. Hist. S. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

His<strong>to</strong>ry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1987. At <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR<br />

Institute in Moscow, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Kas’ianenko heads up <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> construction<br />

<strong>of</strong> socialism field <strong>of</strong> study. (LDA 89-11378.)<br />

Kumanev, Vik<strong>to</strong>r A. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong><br />

since December 1987. Responsible for scientific-systematic questions for <strong>the</strong><br />

Molodin, Viacheslav I., D. Hist. S. Born in 1948. His<strong>to</strong>rian and Archaeologist.<br />

Specialist in <strong>the</strong> archeology and in <strong>the</strong> prehis<strong>to</strong>ric and ancient his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Siberia.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR from 1987. He<br />

graduated for <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk State <strong>University</strong> in 1971 and was Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

its middle school. In 1973, he joined <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry, Philology and Philosophy<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department, and in 1983, he was Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> that<br />

institute studying <strong>the</strong> archaeology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bronze and ages. He has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor,<br />
