In addition <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> 11 research institutes directly subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

RAS <strong>the</strong>re are ano<strong>the</strong>r 25 research institutes located in o<strong>the</strong>r areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> former<br />

Soviet Union that do research in <strong>the</strong> same fields as <strong>the</strong> institutes iust cited.<br />

Early Institutes<br />

1. M. T. Aibeka Museum <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Peoples <strong>of</strong> Uzbekistan in Tashkent. 2. G.<br />

Ibragimova Language, Literature and His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute in Kazan'. 3. I. A.<br />

Dzhavakhishvili His<strong>to</strong>ry, Archeology and Ethnography Institute in Tbilisi. No date<br />

given for founding. This institute is a major center <strong>of</strong> anthropological study in <strong>the</strong><br />

republic. The institute also houses <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Concrete Sociological Research<br />

which conducts studies <strong>of</strong> family relations and development in Georgiia. Its library,<br />

founded in 1917 as <strong>the</strong> Library <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Caucasian His<strong>to</strong>rico-Archeological Institute,<br />

contains <strong>the</strong> personal libraries <strong>of</strong> former eminent pr<strong>of</strong>essors. 4. His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute in<br />

Kiev. 5. His<strong>to</strong>ry, Language and Literature Institute in Makhachkala. Derived from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Daghestani Culture in Makhachkala founded in 1924, expanded and<br />

renamed <strong>the</strong> Scientific Research <strong>of</strong> National Cultures until 1945 when it came under<br />

its present name. 6. Institute <strong>of</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry, Archeology and Ethnography <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Peoples <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far East in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k. 7. His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute in Tashkent.<br />

8. Museum <strong>of</strong> Ethnography in Tartu. Probably dates <strong>to</strong> 1945 with <strong>the</strong> founding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

academy. 9. His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute in Baku. 10. His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute in Riga. 11. Ch. Ch.<br />

Valikhanova His<strong>to</strong>ry, Archeology and Ethnography Institute in Alma-Ata. Shortly<br />

after <strong>the</strong> organization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kazakh <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> in 1946, an ethnography<br />

section was established that has become <strong>the</strong> center <strong>of</strong> anthropological research in <strong>the</strong><br />

republic. 12. Language, Literature and His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute in Petrozavodsk. No date<br />

given for founding in source. 13. Language, Literature and His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute in<br />

Syktyvkar. No date for founding given in source. 14. His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute in Minsk.<br />

No date given in source. 15. His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute in Vilnius. The institute <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>the</strong><br />

Candidate <strong>of</strong> Science degree with specializations in <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR and in<br />

Archeology. It was from this institute that <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Philosophy, Law and<br />

Sociology was taken <strong>to</strong> be given institute status. 16. His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute in Tallinn. No<br />

date <strong>of</strong> founding given in source. 17. His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute in Frunze. No date <strong>of</strong><br />

founding given in source. 18. Akhmada Donisha His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute in Dushanbe. 19.<br />

Sh. B. Batyrova His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute in Ashkhabad. 20. His<strong>to</strong>ry, Language and<br />

Literature Institute in Ufa. 21. Art Studies, Ethnography and Folklore Institute in<br />

Minsk. 22. Archeology and Ethnography Institute in Erevan. In 1959, <strong>the</strong><br />

Archeology sec<strong>to</strong>r and <strong>the</strong> ethnography group <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry were<br />

combined <strong>to</strong> form a separate Institute <strong>of</strong> Archeology and Ethnography within <strong>the</strong><br />

Armenian <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. 23. His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute in Kishinev. 24. Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Ethnography and Art in Kishinev. 25. Archeology Institute in Samarkand.<br />
