<strong>of</strong> 130. Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere, and Radio Wave<br />

Propagation Institute in Irkutsk. He was on <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council on widespread<br />

radiation and “Sun--Earth” <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR; head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council on<br />

Cosmic-physical Research <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy, and on <strong>the</strong><br />

Coordinating Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ministry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Radio Industry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet Union.<br />

In 1990, <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> established<br />

<strong>the</strong> Siberian Center <strong>of</strong> Solar-Terrestrial Physics in Siberia--a new international<br />

research center that combined <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> scientists in two major institutes: <strong>the</strong><br />

Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere and Radio Wave Propagation Institute in Irkutsk<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Cosmophysical Research and Aeronomy in Yakutsk in <strong>the</strong><br />

establishment <strong>of</strong> this new international thrust. As Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere and Radio Wave Propagation, Dr.<br />

Zherebetsov will play a large role in <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> this new international<br />

Brekhovskikh, Leonid M., D. PM. S. Born in 1917 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Strunkino,<br />

Arkhangelsk Province. <strong>Russian</strong> physicist. Corresponding member since 1953, and<br />

academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics, and Geography Department<br />

since 1968. Originally elected <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earth <strong>Sciences</strong> Department. Academician<br />

Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oceanology Department since 1969. He graduated from <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Perm' in 1939. He has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at Moscow State <strong>University</strong><br />

since 1953. From 1954 <strong>to</strong> 1964, he was Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Acoustics Institute that was<br />

founded in 1953 and that researched bioacoustics, hydroacoustics, quantum<br />

acoustics, and ultrasonics--it also had two research ships attached <strong>to</strong> it. He headed a<br />

Department at <strong>the</strong> university from 1964. His early work was on <strong>the</strong> scattering <strong>of</strong> Xrays<br />

in crystals and liquids. In 1942 he began working in acoustics and wave propa-<br />
