<strong>Academy</strong> since August 1988. Since 1976, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Africa<br />

Institute in Moscow. Established in 1959, this institute researches economic, sociopolitical<br />

l, international, his<strong>to</strong>rical l, and cultural-ethnological problems <strong>of</strong> African<br />

states. The institute employs 209 scholars <strong>of</strong> whom 19 hold doc<strong>to</strong>ral degrees and<br />

125 hold candidate degrees. The institute maintains a small branch in St. Petersburg.<br />

Institute scholars work in sections <strong>of</strong> modern problems, international relations <strong>of</strong><br />

African states, social and economic problems <strong>of</strong> African countries, his<strong>to</strong>ry, and<br />

language study. It coordinates its work with <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Oriental Studies. The<br />

institute is structured in five major Departments, a scientific archives and an edi<strong>to</strong>rial<br />

and publications Department. It maintains groups on ma<strong>the</strong>matical modeling, <strong>the</strong><br />

study <strong>of</strong> capitalism in Africa, statistics, analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> economic mechanism,<br />

African religions, law, and human rights.<br />

Kokoshin, Andrei A., C. Hist. S. and D. Phil. S. Born in 1945. Since 1984, he has<br />

been Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States and Canada Institute in Moscow, which<br />

Solodovnikov, Vasilii G., D. Econ. S. Born in 1918. <strong>Russian</strong> economist.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics Department since 1966. Corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new Department since August 1988. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> V. V.<br />

Kuibyshev Industrial Institute in Kuibyshev in 1942 and from <strong>the</strong> All-Union<br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Foreign Trade in 1946. From 1949 <strong>to</strong> 1961, he did scholarly research at<br />

various AN SSSR institutes. From 1961 <strong>to</strong> 1964, he served as a diplomat with rank<br />

<strong>of</strong> envoy extraordinary and plenipotentiary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first class. In 1964, he became<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Africa Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> and from 1965<br />

<strong>to</strong> 1973, he was Vice President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Congress <strong>of</strong> Africanists. His<br />

works are primarily devoted <strong>to</strong> socioeconomic and political problems <strong>of</strong> developing<br />
