Shumnii, Vladimir K., D. Bio. S. Born in 1934. Biologist. Specialist in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong><br />

experimental genetics. Corresponding member since 1979, and academician since<br />

1992. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1958 and joined <strong>the</strong><br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Cy<strong>to</strong>logy and Genetics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department upon graduation<br />

passing successively through positions as labora<strong>to</strong>ry assistant, junior and senior researcher,<br />

and from 1970 <strong>to</strong> 1985, Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r and in 1985, Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> that<br />

institute. He joined <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian <strong>Academy</strong> in 1980. He is Chairman<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council on <strong>the</strong> Biological <strong>Sciences</strong>(1988). He has been on <strong>the</strong><br />

national academy’s Presidium since 1980. He has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor since 1979,<br />

holding <strong>the</strong> chair in cy<strong>to</strong>logy at <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk State <strong>University</strong>. He is Chairman <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Siberian Department’s V. I. Vavilov Genetics and Selection Society. The Altai<br />

International Center for Humanitarian and Biospheric Research. was established in<br />

1991. The center will involve <strong>the</strong> collaboration <strong>of</strong> three major bodies: <strong>the</strong> United<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry, Philology and Philosophy in Akademgorodok-Novosibirsk, <strong>the</strong><br />

Cy<strong>to</strong>logy and Genetics Institute in Akademgorodok-Novosibirsk, and <strong>the</strong> Gorno-<br />

Altai Republican Soviet in Gorno-Altaisk, Russia. As Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Cy<strong>to</strong>logy and Genetics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department located in Akademgorodok-<br />

Novosibirsk, Dr. Shumni will play a major role in <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> this<br />

international research institute.<br />

Skrinskii, Aleksandr N., D. PM. S. Born in 1936 in Orenburg. <strong>Russian</strong> physicist.<br />

Corresponding member since 1968, and academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nuclear Physics<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department<br />

since 1970. He joined <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department in 1980. He<br />

graduated from Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1959. He joined <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> Nuclear Physics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR in 1959, becoming<br />

Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r in 1972 and Direc<strong>to</strong>r in 1977. He has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Novosibirsk since 1969, holding <strong>the</strong> chair in nuclear physics. Since<br />

1977, he has been Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> S<strong>to</strong>rage Rings Labora<strong>to</strong>ry and Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Budker<br />

Nuclear Physics Institute in Novosibirsk that is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy's<br />

Siberian Department. The institute was created in 1957 and is <strong>the</strong> leading nuclear<br />

research facility in Siberia. It studies controlled <strong>the</strong>rmonuclear reactions, particularly<br />

magnetic confinement fusion, and accelera<strong>to</strong>r technology. The institute is located on<br />

<strong>the</strong> shores <strong>of</strong> Lake Ob in Academgorodok that is 35 km south <strong>of</strong> Novosibirsk. There<br />

are 21 research institutes and <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk <strong>University</strong> located in<br />

Academgorodok. The institute employs approximately 3, 000 scientific workers.<br />

His work includes high energy physics and physics and technology <strong>of</strong> chargedparticle<br />

acceleration. In 1980, he was named <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. Since 1988, he has served as Academician Secretary <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Nuclear Physics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. He developed,<br />

with o<strong>the</strong>rs, a method <strong>of</strong> colliding beams. Lenin Prize, 1967. (GSE 23, p.<br />

Sobolev, Nikolai V., D. GM. S. Born in 1935. Geologist. Specialist in Mineralogy and<br />

petrology. Corresponding member since 1981, and academician since 1992. He<br />

graduated from L’vovsk State <strong>University</strong> in 1958. He worked at <strong>the</strong> Mineralogical<br />

museum at <strong>the</strong> university. In 1960 he joined <strong>the</strong> Geology and Geophysics Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department, working as a junior and senior researchers and Head <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> High Pressure Minerals (1973). In 1983, he became Deputy<br />
