Mining Institute imeni V. V. Vazhrushev, and since 1987 he has taught at <strong>the</strong><br />

Yakutsk State <strong>University</strong> where he has guided <strong>the</strong> research <strong>of</strong> nine aspirants for <strong>the</strong><br />

candidate degree. He has written 27 studies <strong>of</strong> which one is a significant<br />

monograph and he has co-authored 79 publications <strong>of</strong> which four are major<br />

monographs. He is Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> Group on International Mining in <strong>the</strong><br />

Arctic <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA Committee, on <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Mechanics, Energetics, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong>, and he is Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Yakutsk Scientific Center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> National<br />

<strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

Zhamoyda, Aleksandr I., D. GM. S. Born in 1921. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Geology, Geochemistry, Geophysics, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department since<br />

December 1987. Since 1970, he has been <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology Scientific<br />

Research Institute located in Leningrad. It was established in 1932 and specializes<br />

in regional geology and in prospecting methods. It is directly subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Ministry <strong>of</strong> Geology. (LDA 89-11378.)<br />

Organization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Leading Institutes: The O. Iurii Shmidt Physics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earth<br />

Institute is organized in<strong>to</strong> seven labora<strong>to</strong>ries that have some 13 Departments; <strong>the</strong> V.<br />

I. Vernadskii Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry Institute is structured around<br />

three divisions that have some 21 labora<strong>to</strong>ries; <strong>the</strong> Geology Institute that dates back<br />

<strong>to</strong> 1937 is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oldest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department's institutes and is organized in<strong>to</strong> five<br />

major divisions; <strong>the</strong> Geology <strong>of</strong> Ore Bodies, Petrography, Mineralogy and<br />

Geochemistry Institute in Moscow dates from <strong>the</strong> 1950s and contains 12<br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ries, and <strong>the</strong> Mineralogy, Geochemistry and Crystal Chemistry <strong>of</strong> Rare<br />

Elements Institute in Moscow includes six labora<strong>to</strong>ries.<br />

Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Research<br />

Institutes: The research institutes directly subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology,<br />

Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department in Moscow or whose<br />

research is directed by <strong>the</strong> department are given below:<br />

1. A. E. Fersman Mineralogical Museum in Moscow.<br />

Located at 18, build 2. Leninskii ave., V-71. 117071/ Directed by<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Aleksandr A. Godovikov, tel. 952-00-67.<br />

Retrospect: This museum dates back <strong>to</strong> St. Petersburg and 1716. It was moved <strong>to</strong><br />

Moscow in 1934. The museum houses major collections <strong>of</strong> minerals, gems and<br />

meteorites from, Russia and <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. Its scientists conduct comparative<br />

studies <strong>of</strong> minerals. Since 1984, its Direc<strong>to</strong>r has been Aleksandr A. Godovikov, D.<br />

GM. S.<br />
