Problems <strong>of</strong> Machine Building, Mechanics and Control Processes Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> since 1979--and now academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Informatics, Computer<br />

Equipment and Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. Since 1963, he has been<br />

rec<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physical Technical Institute in Moscow subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ministry <strong>of</strong><br />

Higher and Secondary Specialized Education. Since 1978, he has been Deputy<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Computer Center in Moscow. The center was established in 1955 and<br />

is now under <strong>the</strong> control <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Information Science, Computer Technology and<br />

Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy. This Department was created in 1984. He is<br />

currently a Deputy <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Informatics, Computer<br />

Equipment and Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> as well as Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Projecting Au<strong>to</strong>mation.<br />

Directed by Academician Vsevolod S. Burtsev, D. Tech. S. Born in 1927 in<br />

Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong> scientist in control processes and computer technology.<br />

Corresponding member since 1976 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Problems <strong>of</strong> Machine Building,<br />

Mechanics and Control Processes Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>; academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Informatics, Computer Equipment and Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department since 1993. He<br />

graduated from <strong>the</strong> Moscow Power Engineering Institute in 1951 and joined <strong>the</strong> staff<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Precision Mechanics and Computer Technology. He became a<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> institute in 1965 and its Direc<strong>to</strong>r in 1973. From 1973 <strong>to</strong> July 1987,<br />

he was <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> S. A. Lebedev Precision Mechanics and Computation<br />

Techniques Institute in Moscow that was established in 1948 subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong>'s General Physics and Astronomy Department for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

developing computer hardware and s<strong>of</strong>tware, concentrating on high speed<br />

computers. His works have included <strong>the</strong> principles and methods <strong>of</strong> building digital<br />

computers, <strong>the</strong>oretical and practical problems <strong>of</strong> au<strong>to</strong>matic control, and <strong>the</strong><br />

principles <strong>of</strong> implementing multi-processing systems. He received <strong>the</strong> State Prize in<br />

1972; <strong>the</strong> Lenin Prize in 1966. He is currently a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bureau Governing<br />

Body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Informatics, Computer Equipment and Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
