Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Marchuk continues <strong>to</strong> be <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute. This institute is a<br />

new type <strong>of</strong> research institute which includes a number <strong>of</strong> leading scientists from a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> disciplines in its research projects. There are some 55 scientific<br />

researchers in <strong>the</strong> institute, including three academicians and two corresponding<br />

members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. There are 13 pr<strong>of</strong>essors and 30<br />

Philosophy Doc<strong>to</strong>rs in ma<strong>the</strong>matics and physics on its staff. The main research<br />

thrusts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute include: ma<strong>the</strong>matical modeling <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> general circulation <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> atmosphere and <strong>the</strong> oceans, <strong>the</strong> transport <strong>of</strong> pollutants in <strong>the</strong> atmospheres and<br />

oceans, ecological phenomena, human immune status throughout <strong>the</strong> world--in<br />

short, <strong>the</strong> syn<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>of</strong> physical and ma<strong>the</strong>matical investigations <strong>of</strong> broad areas such<br />

as <strong>the</strong>se. The Institute is <strong>the</strong> base for <strong>the</strong> Chair <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Modeling <strong>of</strong> Physical<br />

Processes at <strong>the</strong> Moscow Physical Technical Institute. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Marchuk is Head<br />

<strong>of</strong> that chair and its Deputy Head is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor E. E. Tyrtyushnikov. Some 200<br />

students have graduated from <strong>the</strong> Chair since 1981.<br />

The Institute has six labora<strong>to</strong>ries and two research groups within its structure: <strong>the</strong><br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ries are:<br />

1). The Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Numerical Methods <strong>of</strong> Algebra under corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RAS Valentin V. Voevodin, D. PM. S. Born in 1934.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1987.<br />

He is a deputy <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

2). The Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Computational Processes and Algorithms under<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Viacheslav I. Lebedev;<br />

3). The Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Numerical Ma<strong>the</strong>matics under Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Iurii A..<br />

Kuznetsov;<br />

4). The Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Ocean Dynamics under Academician Artem S. Sarkisian; D.<br />

PM. S. Born in 1926. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oceanology, Atmospheric<br />

Physics, and Geography Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1981; academician since<br />

1988. He is Deputy <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department. Since 1971, he<br />

has headed <strong>the</strong> Marine Current Dynamics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> P. P. Shirshov<br />

Oceanology Institute in Moscow.<br />

5). The Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> General Circulation <strong>of</strong> Atmosphere and Ocean under<br />

corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RAS Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Valentin P. Dymnikov, (Dimnikov),<br />

D. PM. S. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> in 1993. In 1972, he was Chief<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Statistical Methods <strong>of</strong> Wea<strong>the</strong>r Forecasting Subdepartment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Satellite<br />

Meteorology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Computer Center in Akademgorodok-Novosibirsk in<br />

Siberia.<br />

6). The Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Modeling in Immunology and Medicine<br />

under Academician and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Gurii I. Marchuk.<br />

The two research "groups" are:<br />

(1). The Scientific research Group <strong>of</strong> Adjoint Equations, Optimization<br />

Methods and Perturbation Theory, headed by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Valeri I. Agoshkov;<br />

and<br />

(2). The Scientific research Group <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Modeling <strong>of</strong> Ecological<br />

Processes under Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Artash E. Aloian (Aloyan).<br />
