Department<br />

Organization <strong>of</strong> O<strong>the</strong>r Leading Research Institutes: The Economics Institute<br />

located in Moscow includes <strong>the</strong> following Departments: 1. The Agriculture<br />

Department; 2. The Economic Accounting and Economic Problems <strong>of</strong> Management<br />

Department; 3. The Economic Effectiveness and New Technology Department; 4.<br />

The Economic Information Department; 5. The Economics <strong>of</strong> Agriculture<br />

Department; 6. The General Problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Political Economy <strong>of</strong> Socialism<br />

Department; 7. The His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Soviet Economies and Soviet Economic Thought<br />

Department; 8. An "unidentified" Department, and, 9. A Reproduction Department.<br />

The Economics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> World Socialist System Institute in Moscow has 14<br />

Departments, including an "unidentified" Department. They include: 1. The<br />

Information Department; 2. The Branch Problems <strong>of</strong> Cooperation Department; 3.<br />

The Economics <strong>of</strong> Agriculture Department; 4. The Economics <strong>of</strong> Industry and<br />

Transportation Department; 5. The Foreign Trade and Price Formation in <strong>the</strong> World<br />

Socialist Market Department; 6. The General Economics Department; 7. The<br />

Planning and <strong>the</strong> International Socialist Division <strong>of</strong> Labor Department; 8. The<br />

Political and Ideological Problems Department; 9. The Relations <strong>of</strong> Socialist<br />

Countries with Capitalist and Developing Countries Department; 10. The Scientific<br />

and Technical Progress and Cooperation Department; 11. The Scientific Information<br />

and Statistics Department, and, 12. The Socialist Countries Department.<br />

Growth: As Figure 24 illustrates, <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> greatest growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics<br />

Department was from 1975 <strong>to</strong> 1980. The Department's institutes collect statistical<br />

data, do statistical research, analyze information, organize economic regional and<br />

national planning for GOSPLAN, and serve as information collec<strong>to</strong>rs and<br />

dissemina<strong>to</strong>rs in Russia. The Department maintains a large computer center in<br />

Moscow. In 1980, as shown in Figure 43, <strong>the</strong>re were 8 SRIs subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Economics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR; in 1992, this<br />

number had grown <strong>to</strong> 13 SRIs, as <strong>the</strong> accompanying listing shows.<br />

Abalkin, Leonid I., D. Econ. S. Born in 1930. <strong>Russian</strong> economist. Corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR and <strong>the</strong> RAN in 1984; and,<br />

an academician in 1987. He was selected as direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics Institute in<br />

Moscow in 1986. That institute was founded in 1955 and its scientists study general<br />

economic <strong>the</strong>ory, agricultural and labor economics, and <strong>Russian</strong> economic<br />

development. He is leading research in population, manpower and labor protection.<br />

He has been a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR from<br />

Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1988. He is presently deputy <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
