institute employs 209 scholars <strong>of</strong> whom 19 hold doc<strong>to</strong>ral degrees and 125 hold<br />

candidate degrees. The institute maintains a small branch in St. Petersburg. Institute<br />

Structure: Institute scholars work in sections <strong>of</strong> modern problems, international<br />

relations <strong>of</strong> African states, social and economic problems <strong>of</strong> African countries,<br />

his<strong>to</strong>ry, and language study. It coordinates its work with <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Oriental<br />

Studies. The institute is structured in five major Departments, a scientific archives<br />

and an edi<strong>to</strong>rial and publications Department. It maintains groups on ma<strong>the</strong>matical<br />

modeling, <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> capitalism in Africa, statistics, an analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> economic<br />

mechanism, African religions, law, and human rights.<br />

The Departments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute include:<br />

(1.) <strong>the</strong> international problems Department with sec<strong>to</strong>rs on problems <strong>of</strong> countries <strong>of</strong><br />

Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Africa and one on analyzing international conflicts;<br />

(2.) <strong>the</strong> economic studies Department with sec<strong>to</strong>rs on <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> productive forces,<br />

financial-economic problems, present-day global problems, and agrarian problems;<br />

(3.) <strong>the</strong> Soviet-African economic and scientific-technical cooperation Department with<br />

sec<strong>to</strong>rs on cooperation between <strong>the</strong> USSR Land African countries and applied<br />

economic research;<br />

(4.) <strong>the</strong> individual countries studies department with sec<strong>to</strong>rs on <strong>the</strong> Arab countries, <strong>the</strong><br />

tropical African countries, <strong>the</strong> socialist-oriented countries, systems analysis <strong>of</strong> social<br />

structures <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> countries <strong>of</strong> West Africa, and groups on <strong>the</strong> problems <strong>of</strong> countries<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Horn <strong>of</strong> Africa land information and regional studies;<br />

(5.) <strong>the</strong> social, political and ideological problems Department with sec<strong>to</strong>rs on <strong>the</strong> social<br />

development <strong>of</strong> African countries, ideology and political problems, nationality and<br />

cultural problems, and documentation and scientific information.<br />

exports in <strong>the</strong> African countries under G. V. Smirnov, S. A. Bessonov, G. I.<br />

Ruinstein; cooperation in raw materials extraction under L. N. Aksiuk; capitalist<br />

development in African countries under L. V. Goncharov; problems <strong>of</strong> economic<br />

development in Africa under Iurii M. Osipov and S. A. Bessonov; social and class<br />

structures and revolutionary processes in Africa under G. B. Starushenko, A. M.<br />

Vasil’ev; global processes and relationships between socialist and developing<br />

countries under V. B. Kokorev, N. D. Kosukhin, and A. A. Tkachenko; ongoing<br />

processes in <strong>the</strong> Third World and East European countries under V. I. Goncharov,<br />

L. V. Goncharov, A. M. Vasil’ev , G. B Starushenko, and L. I. Aleksandrovkaia<br />

(aya), and forecasting <strong>of</strong> economic and scientific-technical development <strong>of</strong> African<br />

Bessonov, and Iurii M. Osipov. The institute maintains relationships with a number<br />

<strong>of</strong> organizations around <strong>the</strong> world that include UCLA and <strong>the</strong> Center for Strategic<br />

and International Studies (USA); some 40 African studies centers; <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Arab studies in Aix-en-Provence; <strong>the</strong> Italian-African Institute in Italy. The Institute<br />
