Khitarov, associate member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR is engaged in investigating <strong>the</strong><br />

physico-chemical principles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> geochemistry <strong>of</strong> abyssal processes;<br />

<strong>the</strong> Geochemistry <strong>of</strong> Magmatic and Metamorphic Rocks Labora<strong>to</strong>ry, started in<br />

1953 and headed now by L. V. Dmitriev, D. Geo. & Min. S. studies <strong>the</strong> physicochemical<br />

and geochemical characteristics <strong>of</strong> magmatic processes in colossal<br />

structures <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mantle and <strong>the</strong> lithosphere;<br />

<strong>the</strong> Geochemistry <strong>of</strong> Alkaline Rocks Labora<strong>to</strong>ry, set up in 1980 and headed by L.<br />

N. , D. Geo. & Min. S. researches <strong>the</strong> origin, evolution and differentiation <strong>of</strong><br />

alkaline magmas, <strong>the</strong> behavior <strong>of</strong> such volatile components as water, carbon<br />

dioxide, sulfur, fluorine and chlorine in mantle and alkaline magmas;<br />

<strong>the</strong> Geochemistry <strong>of</strong> Hydro<strong>the</strong>rmal Ore Formation Labora<strong>to</strong>ry was organized<br />

in 1954 and has been headed since 1978 by R. P. Rafalskii, D. Geo. & Min. S.<br />

investigates <strong>the</strong> conditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> hydro<strong>the</strong>rmal ore deposits;<br />

<strong>the</strong> Geochemistry <strong>of</strong> Rare Elements Labora<strong>to</strong>ry, organized in 1965 and headed by<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor G. B. Naumov, D. Geo. & Min. S. studies <strong>the</strong> conditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> transfer<br />

and concentration <strong>of</strong> elements in hydro<strong>the</strong>rmal processes on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> data on<br />

<strong>the</strong>rmodynamic parameters <strong>of</strong> natural bodies and through <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> physicochemical<br />

simulation;<br />

<strong>the</strong> Theoretical Principles <strong>of</strong> Applied Geochemistry Labora<strong>to</strong>ry, founded in<br />

1973 and headed by V. L. Barsukov, associate member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR and<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute researches <strong>the</strong> geochemistry <strong>of</strong> ore elements, gaseous and<br />

dissolved compounds in hydro<strong>the</strong>rmal solutions, and <strong>the</strong> physico-chemical analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> hydro<strong>the</strong>rmal processes with a view <strong>to</strong> identifying methods <strong>of</strong> prospecting and<br />

deposit evaluation;<br />
