for <strong>the</strong> candidate degree. He was on <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council on folklore <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> and a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coordination council for <strong>the</strong> comparative study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Russian</strong> and American cultures.<br />

Spirkin, Aleksandr G. Born in 1918 in Chiganak, Sara<strong>to</strong>v Oblast. <strong>Russian</strong> philosopher<br />

and psychologist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philosophy and Law Department <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1974. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> V. I. Lenin Moscow Pedagogical<br />

Institute in 1941, and has taught since 1946. From 1960 <strong>to</strong> 1970, he headed <strong>the</strong><br />

philosophy department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sovetskaia (aya) Entsiklopediia Publishing House and<br />

was an assistant edi<strong>to</strong>r-in-Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Encyclopedia <strong>of</strong> Philosophy. He has been a<br />

senior researcher at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Philosophy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1962, and Vice<br />

President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philosophy Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR since 1974. (GSE 24, p.427.)<br />

Starushenko, Gleb B., D. Iur. S. Born in 1922. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Philosophy, Sociology and Law Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1984. Since<br />

1966, he has been Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Africa Institute in Moscow. The institute<br />

was created in 1959 <strong>to</strong> research <strong>the</strong> economic, socio-political l, international,<br />

his<strong>to</strong>rical l, and cultural-ethnological problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> African states. It coordinates<br />

its work with <strong>the</strong> scientists in <strong>the</strong> Oriental Institute. It also maintains a branch in St.<br />

Petersburg. He is currently a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bureau <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department.<br />

Stepanian, Tsolak A., D. Phil. S. Born in 1911 in Satkhe, Georgia. Philosopher.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philosophy and Law Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong><br />

since 1964. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> K. Liebnecht Moscow Pedagogical Institute. He<br />

has taught philosophy in higher educational institutions in Moscow since 1933. In<br />

1946, he joined <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Philosophy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> and in 1965, he became<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>to</strong>r (since 1972, <strong>the</strong> department) <strong>of</strong> scientific communism. His works<br />

are in his<strong>to</strong>rical materialism and scientific communism. (GSE 24, p. 530.)<br />

Yanovskii, Rudolf G., D. Phil. S. Born in 1929. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Philosophy and Law Department since December 1987. Currently also a member <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Bureau <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department. (LDA 89-11378.)<br />

Yusupov, Erkin Iurii, D. Phil. S. Born in 1929. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philosophy,<br />

Economics and Law Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Uzbek <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> since 1984.<br />

Vice President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Uzbek <strong>Academy</strong> since 1979. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Philosophy and Law Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR from December 1987.<br />

The State and Law Institute in Moscow is organized in<strong>to</strong> 17 sections and divisions, that<br />
