Gonchar, Andrei A. Born in 1931 in Leningrad. <strong>Russian</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matician. Corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> since 1974, and academician since 1987. He became Academician<br />

Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Department in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1988 and served until 1992. He<br />

is currently one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vice Presidents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. He<br />

graduated from Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1954 becoming a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>the</strong>re in<br />

1967. Since 1965 he has been associated with <strong>the</strong> V. A. Steklov Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Ma<strong>the</strong>matics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR and <strong>the</strong> RAS. His work includes <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> analytic<br />

functions and <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> approximations. (GSE 30, p. 386.)<br />

Ladyzhenskaia (aya), Olga A., D. PM. S. Born in 1922. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> AN SSSR since 1981; academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RAS in 1992. Since 1962, she has<br />

been Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Physics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> V. A. Steklov Ma<strong>the</strong>matics<br />

Institute Branch Institute in St. Petersburg. According <strong>to</strong> one <strong>Russian</strong><br />

Ma<strong>the</strong>matician, she is <strong>the</strong> best specialist on partial differential equations in Russia--if<br />

not in <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

Lavrentiev, Mikhail M. Born in July 1932 in Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matician. He has<br />

been a corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR since 1981; academician <strong>of</strong> that<br />

department since 1992. He graduated from Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1955. He<br />

joined <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department in 1957. He has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk<br />

State <strong>University</strong> since 1963, holding <strong>the</strong> chair in ma<strong>the</strong>matical problems in<br />

geophysics. From 1980 <strong>to</strong> 1986, he directed <strong>the</strong> Computer Center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian<br />

Department. In 1986 he was named Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Institute in<br />

Novosibirsk that was founded in 1957 <strong>to</strong> research <strong>the</strong>oretical and applied<br />

ma<strong>the</strong>matics. He is <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> M. A. Lavrentiev, <strong>the</strong> first Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian<br />

Department. He was named <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department in 1987.<br />

Since 1988, he has been Head edi<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Journal. He is a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Society <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Geology. Honored scientist <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> former<br />

Soviet Union. He received <strong>the</strong> Lenin Laureate Prize in 1962, <strong>the</strong> State prize in 1987.<br />

Recipient <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r medals and recognitions. He has been a member <strong>of</strong><br />

Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Department Bureau (governing body) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Marchenko, Vladimir A., D. PM. S. (Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Physics) Ukrainian Ma<strong>the</strong>matician.<br />

Born in 1922. Recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lenin Prize in 1962. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics<br />

and Cybernetics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ukrainian <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> since 1969.<br />

Awarded <strong>the</strong> N. M Krilov Prize in Ma<strong>the</strong>matics, Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Physics and<br />

Theoretical Cybernetics in 1983. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR since December<br />

1987. Recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Prize for Science and Technology in 1989.<br />

Maslov, Vik<strong>to</strong>r P., D. PM. S. Born in 1930. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since<br />

1984. He was awarded <strong>the</strong> State Prize in Science and Technology for a series <strong>of</strong><br />

work done with o<strong>the</strong>rs from 1973-<strong>to</strong> 1976. In 1983, he received <strong>the</strong> A. M.<br />

Liapunov Gold Medal for his ma<strong>the</strong>matical contributions <strong>to</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> science. In<br />

1985 he received <strong>the</strong> Lenin prize for his work "Global Asymp<strong>to</strong>tic Methods <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> Linear Equations with Partial Derivatives."<br />

Mishchenko, E. F., D. PM. S. Born in March 1922 in Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matician.<br />

He has been a corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy since 1951 and an<br />

academician since 1984. He graduated from Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1951,<br />

becoming a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Moscow Physico-Technical Institute in 1959. He joined<br />

<strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> V. A. Steklov Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Institute in Moscow in 1951 and since<br />

1967, has served as its Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r. His work has dealt with <strong>the</strong> ordinary<br />

differential equations and <strong>the</strong>ir applications <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> vibrations. He also<br />

works in control <strong>the</strong>ory. He has received numerous recognitions, including <strong>the</strong><br />

Lenin Prize which he received in 1962. (GSE 30, p. 563.)<br />
