Theriologic Society. His works are in ecological morphology, hydrobionics,<br />

ecology, and mammalian taxonomy and chemical communication. In 1975, he<br />

received <strong>the</strong> A. N. Severtsov Prize in biology and animal morphology. He is<br />

presently direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Evolution Morphology and Animals' Ecology Institute<br />

Retrospect: The institute assumed its present role and scope and name in 1967. It traces<br />

This important institute traces its beginnings back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Labora<strong>to</strong>ry Experimental<br />

Zoology founded by A. O. Kovalevskii in 1893. It also includes <strong>the</strong> academy's<br />

Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Evolutionary Morphology founded by A. N. Severtsov in 1930. In<br />

1977, <strong>the</strong> institute was organized in<strong>to</strong> 20 labora<strong>to</strong>ries and several additional<br />

research groups. Studies <strong>the</strong> evolutionary process and analyzes <strong>the</strong> transformation<br />

<strong>of</strong> living creatures. The institute has worked with several scientific councils <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

USSR <strong>Academy</strong> and has cooperated in joint projects administered by <strong>the</strong> U. S.<br />

Environmental Protection Agency. The institute operates a number <strong>of</strong> biological<br />

stations and experimental bases in <strong>the</strong> Moscow, Kostroma and Krasnodar regions<br />

and in <strong>the</strong> Ukrainian and Tadzhik republics. It also researches porpoises, lower<br />

aquatic animals, and soil biology.<br />

Retrospect: The institute was established in 1930 in a merger <strong>of</strong> several departments<br />

within <strong>the</strong> former Geological Museum <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet Union. The institute is <strong>the</strong> site<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Iurii A. Orlov Paleon<strong>to</strong>logical Museum which is under <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> N. N.<br />

Kalandadze, C. Sci. The museum staff also conducts research on fossil organisms.<br />
