2. Control Problems Institute in Moscow.<br />

Retrospect: Established in 1939. Subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ministry <strong>of</strong> Industry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

Federation although <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> guides its scientific research methodology. The<br />

institute studies au<strong>to</strong>mation, systems analysis, and computer modeling. The<br />

Control Problems Institute in 1980 listed no labora<strong>to</strong>ries and only five scientists in<br />

its central <strong>of</strong>fice. Because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> problems <strong>of</strong> scientific instrumentation needs in<br />

Russia, this institute is destined <strong>to</strong> grow.<br />

Structure and Scientific Personnel: Direc<strong>to</strong>r Prangishvili, Iverii V., D. Tech. S.,<br />

August '87; Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>rs: Kortnev, Ana<strong>to</strong>li, since '76; Medvedev, Vladimir<br />

organized in four divisions with 13 labora<strong>to</strong>ries.<br />

The Chemical Division has four labora<strong>to</strong>ries:<br />

1. <strong>the</strong> Heterogeneous Systems Labora<strong>to</strong>ry,<br />

2. <strong>the</strong> Mechanics <strong>of</strong> Anomalous Fluids Labora<strong>to</strong>ry,<br />

3. <strong>the</strong> Polymer Mechanics Labora<strong>to</strong>ry, and<br />

4. <strong>the</strong>oretical Elasticity Labora<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

The Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Division--one labora<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

The Physical Mechanics Division has four labora<strong>to</strong>ries:<br />

1. <strong>the</strong> Classical Mechanics Labora<strong>to</strong>ry,<br />

2. <strong>the</strong> Friction and Wear Labora<strong>to</strong>ry,<br />

3. <strong>the</strong> Optimal Control <strong>of</strong> Motion Labora<strong>to</strong>ry, and<br />

4. <strong>the</strong> Random Vibrations in Nonlinear Systems Labora<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

The Physics and Gas Dynamics Division supervises <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> four labora<strong>to</strong>ries:<br />

1. <strong>the</strong> Combustion Instability Labora<strong>to</strong>ry,<br />

2. <strong>the</strong> Mechanical Action <strong>of</strong> Laser Beams Labora<strong>to</strong>ry,<br />

3. <strong>the</strong> Plasma Mechanics Labora<strong>to</strong>ry, and<br />

4. <strong>the</strong> Shock Wave Labora<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

3. Problems <strong>of</strong> Mechanics Institute in Moscow.<br />

Retrospect: Established in 1965. It conducts research on gas dynamic processes,<br />

including combustion instability, plasma, laser beams and shock waves. Structure<br />

and Scientific Personnel: Direc<strong>to</strong>r From 1974 <strong>to</strong> 1989, Aleksandr Iurii Ishlinskii,<br />

D. PM. S., was Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute. Since 1989, <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute<br />

has been Dmitrii M. Klimov, D. PM. S. Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>rs: Generalov, Nikolai A.,<br />

C. PM. S., November '86; Klimov, Dmitri M., D. PM. S., since '78; and,<br />
