Iakovlev, D. V. Petrov, and N. V. Biriulin. International ties: The institute has ties<br />

with institutes in <strong>the</strong> United States (George Washing<strong>to</strong>n and Stanford Universities),<br />

Iapan, Italy, India, South Korea, and a number <strong>of</strong> institutes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chinese <strong>Academy</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Chinese Social sciences <strong>Academy</strong> and Chinese universities.<br />

Since 1971, <strong>the</strong> institute has published a bimonthly Problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far East, and<br />

since 1973, a general journal on Chinese policy, economy and culture. The institute<br />

The Institute <strong>of</strong> Far Eastern Studies (IFES) is a leading research institution in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> (RAS). IFES coordinates studies on modern China, North-<br />

East Asia, and Russia's relations with China, Iapan, and Korea. The Institute is <strong>the</strong><br />

successor <strong>of</strong> democratic traditions inherent in <strong>Russian</strong> Sinology and Oriental<br />

Studies laid by <strong>the</strong> outstanding scholars such as Bichurin N.Y., Vassilyev V.P.,<br />

Alexeyev V.M., Conrad N.I. et al. The IFES was established by decision <strong>of</strong><br />

Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> in September, 1966 and Pr<strong>of</strong>.Dr.<br />

M.I. Sladkovskii, a Corresponding Member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong><br />

was appointed <strong>to</strong> be its Direc<strong>to</strong>r. From 1985 and on, <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r's position has<br />

been held by Pr<strong>of</strong>.Dr. Mikhail Titarenko, Member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Natural <strong>Sciences</strong> (RANS). The Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>rs for studies are: Dr. Rustam<br />

Aslanov; Corresponding Member <strong>of</strong> RAS Pr<strong>of</strong>. Dr. Vladimir Miasnikov, and Dr.<br />

Vladimir Portyakov; Dr. Ana<strong>to</strong>ly (Ana<strong>to</strong>lii) Kozlov is Executive Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

FES Academic Council, and Mr. Vladimir Zhukov is Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r for<br />

Administration.<br />

At present, <strong>the</strong> IFES research staff includes more than 200 orientalists-- economists,<br />

his<strong>to</strong>rians, philosophers, poli<strong>to</strong>logists, linguists, ecologists, culturologists,<br />
