Prokhorov, Iurii V., D. PM. S. Born in December 1929 in Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong><br />

ma<strong>the</strong>matician. He has been a corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1966 and an academician since 1972. He<br />

graduated from Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1949 and became a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>the</strong>re in<br />

1957. He began working at <strong>the</strong> V. A. Steklov Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Institute in 1949. His<br />

principal works are in probability <strong>the</strong>ory, particularly asymp<strong>to</strong>tic methods. He has<br />

researched classical limit <strong>the</strong>orems, investigating conditions under which <strong>the</strong> strong<br />

law <strong>of</strong> large numbers and o<strong>the</strong>r so-called local <strong>the</strong>orems can be applied <strong>to</strong> sums <strong>of</strong><br />

independent random variables. He has made major contributions <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> queuing<br />

<strong>the</strong>ory. Since 1969, he has been a Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> V. A. Steklov<br />

Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Institute in Moscow, that was established in 1921 and that does<br />

research in pure ma<strong>the</strong>matics and ma<strong>the</strong>matical physics. Since 1976, he has headed<br />

<strong>the</strong> Probability Theory Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Steklov Institute. He was on <strong>the</strong> head<br />

Edi<strong>to</strong>rial Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> third edition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Great Soviet Encyclopedia. He received<br />

<strong>the</strong> Lenin Prize in 1970. He directs <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Committee <strong>of</strong><br />

Bernoulli Society on Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Statistics, Probability Theory, Combina<strong>to</strong>rics<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> two Steklov research institutes directly subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> was from 1970 <strong>to</strong> 1980, as Figure 14 shows.<br />
