he worked in Moscow. Since 1959, he has been in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k where in 1962, he<br />

organized and headed <strong>the</strong> Chemical Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Natural Physiologically Active<br />

Compounds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Branch (now Department) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. Since 1964, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bio-organic<br />

Chemistry Institute (Pacific) in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k that is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern<br />

Scientific department and that studies <strong>the</strong> exploitation <strong>of</strong> marine and terrestrial plant<br />

and animal sources <strong>of</strong> natural drugs. Also Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Steroid and Terpenoid<br />

Chemistry Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> that institute. His works are in <strong>the</strong> syn<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>of</strong><br />

glycosides,, sterols, and glycosides from <strong>the</strong> roots <strong>of</strong> ginseng and o<strong>the</strong>r plants <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> family. (GSE 9, p. 115.)<br />

Fedo<strong>to</strong>v, Sergei A., D. PM. S. Born in 1931 in Leningrad. <strong>Russian</strong> geophysicist.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining<br />

<strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1970; academician in 1993. Also a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department. He graduated from Moscow State<br />

<strong>University</strong> in 1953. From 1957 <strong>to</strong> 1971, he worked at <strong>the</strong> O. Iurii Shmidt Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> Earth Physics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. Since 1971, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Volcanology Institute at-Kamchatskii (<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>) that was established in 1961 <strong>to</strong> study volcanism in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Churl-Kamchatka zone. In 1975, he was elected Vice President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

International Association <strong>of</strong> Volcanology and Chemistry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earth's Interior. His<br />

principal works deal with <strong>the</strong> internal structure and seismicity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth,<br />

properties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth's mantle, <strong>the</strong> mechanism <strong>of</strong> deep magmatic and volcanic<br />

activity, and long-term earthquake predictions. (GSE 27, p. 137.)<br />

Il’ichev, Vik<strong>to</strong>r I. Born in 1932 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Tikhonovo, Vladimir Oblast. Vice<br />

President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> for <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department since 1987. <strong>Russian</strong><br />

hydrologist and hydroacoustics specialist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics, and Geography Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong><br />

since 1976 and, academician since 1981. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Gorkiy in 1955. Between 1955 and 1974 he was on <strong>the</strong> Acoustics Institute staff. In<br />

1974, he became Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pacific Ocean Oceanology Institute in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k<br />

established in 1973 <strong>to</strong> study <strong>the</strong> complex hydrophysics <strong>of</strong> water masses, sea swell,<br />

energy exchange, and <strong>the</strong> interactions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ocean. It is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong>'s Far Eastern Department. Since March 1986, he has been Chairman <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. His works deal with acoustic and<br />

hydrodynamic cavitation, <strong>the</strong> resistance <strong>of</strong> liquids <strong>to</strong> cavitation, and marine hydrology.<br />

Ovodov, Iurii S. Born in 1937. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Biochemistry, Biophysics, and<br />

Chemistry <strong>of</strong> Physiologically Active Compounds Department (now <strong>the</strong> Physical<br />

and Chemical Biology Department) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern<br />

Department in 1993. Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Carbohydrate Chemistry Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Bioorganic Chemistry Institute in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k since '69, which was established in<br />

<strong>the</strong> mid-1960s and which studies <strong>the</strong> exploitation <strong>of</strong> marine and terrestrial plant and<br />

animal sources <strong>of</strong> natural drugs. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ovodov has been a Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> institute since 1969.<br />

Shcheglov, Aleksei D., D. GM. S. Born in 1926. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Far Eastern Department since 1979; academician in 1993. Since 1979, he has been<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology Institute in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k that studies <strong>the</strong> laws <strong>of</strong> distribution<br />

<strong>of</strong> deposits <strong>of</strong> useful minerals in <strong>the</strong> Far East and since 1980, he has served as<br />

Deputy Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

Shilo, Nikolai A., C. GM. S. Born in 1913 in Piatigorsk. <strong>Russian</strong> geologist.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining<br />
