Scientists like N. N. Dikov, have conducted extensive expeditions throughout <strong>the</strong> region as<br />

well as on <strong>the</strong> Kamchatka peninsula. It publishes a Trudy series on <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry and<br />

culture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> peoples <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>astern USSR Its scholars have produced a fivevolume<br />

his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Siberia, a two-volume his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> Far East and have<br />

compiled a his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chukotka peninsula from prehis<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>to</strong> present times. The<br />

institute has established relations with <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Alaska, <strong>the</strong> Sorbonne, <strong>the</strong><br />

Italian Archeological Society, <strong>the</strong> Hokkaido <strong>University</strong> in Japan, and with<br />

3. The Far East Geological Institute in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k.<br />

Nekrasov, Igor Ia. Since 1988, he has been <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Geology<br />

Institute in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

It was founded in 1959 <strong>to</strong> study <strong>the</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> useful minerals in <strong>the</strong> region. He<br />

was a corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> in 1993.<br />

Established in 1959, <strong>the</strong> institute studies <strong>the</strong> laws governing <strong>the</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> mineral<br />

deposits in <strong>the</strong> transition zone from Asia <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pacific. The institute was made up<br />

<strong>of</strong> 18 labora<strong>to</strong>ries--or research teams--in 1992, each under <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> a senior<br />

and prominent scientist. The present institute Direc<strong>to</strong>r Dr. Igor Ia. Nekrasov D.<br />

Geol. S., was appointed in 1988. He is a corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Donetsk Industrial Institute in 1951,<br />

having concentrated on mineralogy and <strong>the</strong> genesis <strong>of</strong> ore deposits. At present his<br />

primary interests are in <strong>the</strong> geochemistry <strong>of</strong> gold and platinum deposits. Deputy<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>rs: Dr. Aleksandr I. Khanchuk D. Geol. S., Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Regional Geology<br />

Labora<strong>to</strong>ry and Dr. Sergei A. Shcheka, D. Geol. S., who graduated from <strong>the</strong> Far<br />

East Polytechnical Institute in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k in 1960 at which time he began work at<br />

<strong>the</strong> institute--he received his doc<strong>to</strong>rate from <strong>the</strong> Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1988.<br />

He studies petrology and <strong>the</strong> mineralogy <strong>of</strong> mafic and ultramafic rocks; Councilor:<br />

Ekaterinburg A. Radkevich, D. GM. S., was born in 1908 in Kiev. He has been a<br />

corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> academy since 1970 and is also a member <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Middle Asian Geological<br />

Exploration Institute in Tashkent in 1931 and did geological work in Middle Asia<br />

until 1932. Between 1937 and 1959, he worked at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Geological<br />

<strong>Sciences</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> academy--now <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Geology <strong>of</strong> Ore Deposits,<br />

Petrography, Mineralogy, and Geochemistry. In 1959, he was appointed Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far East Geological Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k. He<br />

served as Direc<strong>to</strong>r until 1977. His principal works are in ore deposits and<br />

metallogeny; Learned Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute: Dr. Vladimir K. Popov, D. Geol.<br />

S., and <strong>the</strong> Associate Direc<strong>to</strong>r for International Relations: Ms. Lydia I. Kovbas.<br />

The staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute <strong>to</strong>taled 135 scientists in 1992. The 18 labora<strong>to</strong>ries include:<br />
