Siberian Department in 1980. In 1964, he taught at <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Novosibirsk,<br />

becoming a pr<strong>of</strong>essor in 1970. Since 1980, he has been on <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Siberian Department. He Developed principles for geological data ga<strong>the</strong>ring from<br />

vibration sounding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth's interior. His major work has been in seismology.<br />

He has headed <strong>the</strong> Scientific Society for <strong>the</strong> Mechanical Ma<strong>the</strong>matical <strong>Sciences</strong> in<br />

Energetics, <strong>the</strong> Coordination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet Scientific Committee on <strong>the</strong> Earth’s<br />

Vibration Processes, <strong>the</strong> Soviet Committee for Methods <strong>of</strong> Distance Finding, <strong>the</strong><br />

Committee for Computing Technology, and <strong>the</strong> regional section <strong>of</strong> Siberia and <strong>the</strong><br />

Far Eastern Scientific Service for Modeling Complex Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Problems. Since<br />

1976, he has been a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Society, and since 1981<br />

a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Pho<strong>to</strong>grammetry Association, and since 1983 he has<br />

been a specialist (consultant) on sources <strong>of</strong> seismic control. In 1982, he received a<br />

State Prize and is <strong>the</strong> holder <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r medals recognizing his<br />

The Complex Institute produces studies in algebra, ma<strong>the</strong>matical analysis, applied ma<strong>the</strong>matics,<br />

numerical methods for solving problems <strong>of</strong> mechanics <strong>of</strong> continuous<br />

media, and information systems for local Omsk industrial enterprises. The<br />

Compound Institute maintains a labora<strong>to</strong>ry and a Department in Omsk and Barnaul.<br />

Conducts research on applied ma<strong>the</strong>matics, long-range wea<strong>the</strong>r forecasting,<br />

formulation <strong>of</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matical models, and development <strong>of</strong> computational methods.<br />

The institute maintains a labora<strong>to</strong>ry in Barnaul that deals with <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong><br />

au<strong>to</strong>mated systems for <strong>the</strong> control <strong>of</strong> industrial enterprises and <strong>the</strong>ir adaptation <strong>to</strong><br />

local enterprises in <strong>the</strong> Altai terri<strong>to</strong>ry. The center has established a Complex<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Computing Center in Omsk on <strong>the</strong> site <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian<br />

Department's labora<strong>to</strong>ries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Institute, <strong>the</strong> Hydrodynamics<br />

Institute, and <strong>the</strong> Computing Center--all <strong>of</strong> which have been operating as<br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ries in Omsk since 1978.<br />

6. Computer Center in Akademgorodok. Established in 1963. Its founder and first<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r was G. I. Marchuk (1963 <strong>to</strong> 1980), who later became Head <strong>of</strong> GKNT and<br />

President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> until 1990. Since 1980, <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Computer Center has been Ana<strong>to</strong>lii S. Alekseev, D. PM. S., academician <strong>of</strong><br />

Founded in 1964, <strong>the</strong> Computing Center <strong>of</strong> SB RAS has been engaged in research on<br />

computational and applied ma<strong>the</strong>matics in such areas as <strong>the</strong> modelling <strong>of</strong> processes<br />

in <strong>the</strong> atmosphere and ocean, environmental protection problems, methods <strong>of</strong><br />

ma<strong>the</strong>matical modelling in geophysics, geophysical informatics, simulation <strong>of</strong><br />

informatics systems, telecommunication systems, s<strong>of</strong>tware for supercomputers.<br />
