<strong>the</strong> “Effect <strong>of</strong> Pollution on Vegetation, including Forest Ecosystems” and <strong>the</strong><br />

“Development <strong>of</strong> Methods and Programs on Statistical and Imitational Modeling <strong>of</strong><br />

Wood Ring Formation”, <strong>the</strong> “Dendroclima<strong>to</strong>logic Moni<strong>to</strong>ring <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

Borderline <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Forest along <strong>the</strong> Circumpolar Region <strong>of</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> Terri<strong>to</strong>ry, ” and<br />

with o<strong>the</strong>r projects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Union <strong>of</strong> Forest Research Organizations.<br />

His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute<br />

The Institute <strong>of</strong> Forest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> was founded in 1944. It was<br />

intended <strong>to</strong> head and coordinate <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical studies which reveal forest nature<br />

and are directed <strong>to</strong> establish <strong>the</strong> scientific base <strong>of</strong> forest management. The<br />

Academician Sukachev was organizer and <strong>the</strong> first direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute (1944 -<br />

1958)<br />

In 1958 <strong>the</strong> Institute was moved from Moscow <strong>to</strong> Krasnoyarsk and was included <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

system <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. Being faced<br />

with new tasks <strong>the</strong> Institute was named The Institute <strong>of</strong> Forest and Wood <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Siberian Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>.<br />

The Institute <strong>of</strong> Forest and Wood SB USSR <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> was supervised by <strong>the</strong><br />

Academician A. B.Z hukov (1958-1977), <strong>the</strong> Academician A. S. Isaev (1977-<br />

1988), E. S. Petrenko (1988-1994).<br />

In 1967 was named after its organizer Sukachev.<br />

In connection with <strong>the</strong> reorganization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute<br />

entered <strong>the</strong> Siberian Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. In 1992 it<br />

was named The V. N. Sukachev Institute <strong>of</strong> Forest <strong>of</strong> SB <strong>of</strong> RAS. Since 1994, <strong>the</strong><br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute has been <strong>the</strong> corresponding member <strong>of</strong> RAS Evgenii<br />

Alexandrovich Vaganov.<br />

The Siberian International Centre for Ecological Research <strong>of</strong> Boreal Forests was<br />

established at <strong>the</strong> Institute in 1991.<br />

The Institute has 4 sec<strong>to</strong>rs which contain 17 labora<strong>to</strong>ries.<br />

The Institute manages a network <strong>of</strong> field expedition stations in <strong>the</strong> Siberian area.<br />

There are two specialized scientific-academic councils in <strong>the</strong> Institute: for <strong>the</strong> defense <strong>of</strong><br />

candidate and doc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>the</strong>ses.<br />

The Institute is <strong>the</strong> leading academic scientific institution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country in <strong>the</strong> forest<br />

science.<br />
