It originated from the Sector of Molecular Generators (established in 1956 and headed by Professor N.G. Basov) of the Laboratory of Oscillations of the P. N. Lebedev Physical Institute. In January 1963, the Sector of Molecular Generators was reorganized into the Laboratory of Quantum Radiophysics. In the subsequent years, some more laboratories had been organized on its basis, They formed the Institute of Quantum Radiophysics of the P. N. Lebedev Physical Institute, and the affiliate Branch in the town of Samara (the Samara Branch of P. N. Lebedev Physical Institute, in 1980). The Institute of Quantum Radiophysics is headed by academician N.G.Basov, the Nobel, Lenin and State Prizes winner.
