Sobolev, Nikolai V., D. GM. S. Born in 1935. Geologist. Specialist in Mineralogy<br />

and petrology. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> The Geology, Geophysics,<br />

Geochemistry, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1981, and<br />

academician since 1992. He graduated from L’vovsk State <strong>University</strong> in 1958. He<br />

worked at <strong>the</strong> Mineralogical museum at <strong>the</strong> university. In 1960 he joined <strong>the</strong><br />

Geology and Geophysics Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department, working as a junior<br />

and senior researchers and Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> High Pressure Minerals<br />

(1973). In 1983, he became Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> that institute. He has been a<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor since 1985. He was Chairman <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council on <strong>the</strong> Natural<br />

<strong>Sciences</strong> for <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department for diamond deposits in<br />

1983. He became Vice President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mineralogy Society in 1982 and a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mineralogy Specialists Association in 1982. In 1986 he became a member <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> American Geophysical Society. He received <strong>the</strong> Lenin Prize in 1976. He is<br />

presently heading a research program on <strong>the</strong> specifics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> minerals<br />

and <strong>the</strong> evolution <strong>of</strong> deep zones <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lithosphere. At present he is Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Mineralogy and Petrography Institute in Akademgorodok-Novosibirsk. He is in<br />

charge <strong>of</strong> a wide-ranging research program which includes: <strong>the</strong> reconstruction <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> geologic mineralogical process formation <strong>of</strong> diamond deposits as a base for <strong>the</strong><br />

improvement <strong>of</strong> methods <strong>of</strong> forecasting <strong>the</strong>ir discovery; <strong>the</strong> crystallization,<br />

dissolving and stability <strong>of</strong> diamonds and new methods <strong>of</strong> cutting and polishing<br />

<strong>the</strong>m; experimental modeling <strong>of</strong> minerals and <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> rocks under conditions<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth's mantle; research in <strong>the</strong> dynamics and kinetics <strong>of</strong> metamorphism,<br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> specific metamorphic formations, and <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> models;<br />

mineral groups <strong>of</strong> sillimanite, new raw material sources for <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong><br />

aluminum, silumin, and firepro<strong>of</strong> materials; <strong>the</strong>rmo-geochemical research <strong>of</strong><br />

magmatic and metamorphic processes and <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> ores connected with <strong>the</strong>m;<br />

modeling hydrodynamic <strong>the</strong>rmophysical and chemical processes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong><br />

minerals and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dynamics <strong>of</strong> geologic systems; experimental crystal chemistry.<br />

He received <strong>the</strong> Lenin Prize in 1976.<br />

Sokolov, Boris S., D. GM. S. Born in 1914 in Vyshnii Volochek, in what is now<br />

Kalinin Oblast. <strong>Russian</strong> geologist and paleon<strong>to</strong>logist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> since 1958, and academician since 1968. He graduated from Leningrad<br />

State <strong>University</strong> in 1937 and taught <strong>the</strong>re from 1937 <strong>to</strong> 1945 and from 1945 <strong>to</strong><br />

1958. In 1958, he started working at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Geology and Geophysics <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Siberian Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. He has been on <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk<br />

<strong>University</strong> faculty from 1960, becoming a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>the</strong>re in 1964. Since 1960, he<br />

has been Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stratigraphy <strong>of</strong> Precambrian and Paleozoic Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Geology and Geophysics Institute in Novosibirsk that was established in 1958 <strong>to</strong><br />

discover and develop Siberian mineral resources. In 1972, he was made Vice<br />

President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Paleon<strong>to</strong>logical Union. He has been Academician<br />

Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> geology, geophysics and geochemistry section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR<br />

from 1975. His work is in <strong>the</strong> Paleozoic corals, Proterozoic and Cambrian<br />

Organisms, <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> organic world during <strong>the</strong><br />

Precambrian, and <strong>the</strong> biostratigraphy during <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Paleozoic. He<br />

identified <strong>the</strong> Wend complex. In 1974, he was elected President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> All-Union<br />

Paleon<strong>to</strong>logical Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. In 1975, he became a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. Since 1968, he has been an<br />

honorary member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geological Society <strong>of</strong> Sweden, and since 1963, a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geological Society <strong>of</strong> France. Lenin Prize, 1967. He received <strong>the</strong> coveted A.<br />

P. Karpinskii Gold Medal in 1979 for his work in geological research. He heads<br />

<strong>the</strong> Precambrian Paleon<strong>to</strong>logy Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Paleon<strong>to</strong>logical Institute and<br />
