Retrospect: The academy's Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Oceanography was elevated <strong>to</strong> institute status in<br />

1946 and renamed. It is <strong>the</strong> largest <strong>Russian</strong> research institute for marine sciences. It<br />

uses manned and unmanned submersibles in research. The institute operates<br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ries in St. Petersburg , Gelendzhia, Kaliningrad. Its scientists deal with<br />

problems <strong>of</strong> sea pollution and its impact on marine life. It publishes Trudy. The<br />

institute has a branch located in Gelendzhik. Direc<strong>to</strong>r Viacheslav S. Iastrebov, D.<br />
