Dzhelepov, Venedikt P., D. PM. S. Born in April 1913 in Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong><br />

physicist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nuclear Physics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> since 1966. He graduated from Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1937.<br />

From 1941 <strong>to</strong> 1943, he worked at <strong>the</strong> Physicotechnical Institute, and from 1943 <strong>to</strong><br />

1948, at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> A<strong>to</strong>mic Physics. From 1948 <strong>to</strong> 1956, he was Deputy<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Nuclear Problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. Since 1956, he has<br />

directed <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> a labora<strong>to</strong>ry in <strong>the</strong> Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in<br />

Dubna. His works have been on <strong>the</strong> a<strong>to</strong>mic nuclei and elementary particles. Since<br />

1965, he has been working on applications <strong>of</strong> nuclear physics <strong>to</strong> medicine. He was<br />

<strong>the</strong> first in <strong>the</strong> USSR <strong>to</strong> develop a pro<strong>to</strong>n beam for medical uses. State Prizes, 1961<br />

and 1963. He is presently a deputy <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nuclear<br />

Physics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. He is presently <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nuclear<br />

Problems Labora<strong>to</strong>ry at IINR in Dubna. (GSE 8, p. 493.)<br />

Chudakov, Aleksandr E., D. PM. S. Born in June 1921 in Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong><br />

physicist. (Son <strong>of</strong> E. A. Chudakov.) Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nuclear<br />

Physics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1966, and academician since 1987. He<br />

graduated from Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1947. From 1946 <strong>to</strong> 1971, he was on<br />

<strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Physics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. In 1971, he joined <strong>the</strong> Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> Nuclear Research <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. Since 1976, he has been Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lep<strong>to</strong>n<br />

High Energy Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lep<strong>to</strong>n High Energy and Neutrino Astrophysics<br />

Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nuclear Research Institute in Moscow. His works include <strong>the</strong><br />

study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> properties <strong>of</strong> cosmic rays. He developed a method for measuring <strong>the</strong><br />

energy <strong>of</strong> a particle that caused a cosmic ray shower. Toge<strong>the</strong>r with S. N. Vernov<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>rs, he discovered <strong>the</strong> earth's outer radiation belt. Lenin Prize, 1960. He is<br />

presently a deputy <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nuclear Physics Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. He is also head <strong>of</strong> a Labora<strong>to</strong>ry at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Nuclear<br />

1981. He graduated in 1949 from Moscow Physical Engineering Institute where he<br />

became a pr<strong>of</strong>essor in 1965. From 1949 <strong>to</strong> 1968, he served on <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Physics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. In 1968, he was appointed Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

High Energy Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna. His<br />
