econfirmed in 1992. He has authored 64 scientific works <strong>of</strong> which four<br />

monographs published from 1973 <strong>to</strong> 1980 are considered <strong>to</strong> be scientifically<br />

significant. He is <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yakutsk Biology Institute. He has studied<br />

pollution ecology and <strong>the</strong> ecology <strong>of</strong> plants and has established an original school<br />

for research and study in <strong>the</strong>se fields. For 18 years he has held <strong>the</strong> chair <strong>of</strong> zoology<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Yakutsk State <strong>University</strong> where he has directed <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> 12 aspirants for<br />

<strong>the</strong> candidate degree. He was a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ecological section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scientific<br />

Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR on problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fundamental control <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

environment and <strong>the</strong> reconstruction <strong>of</strong> animal world; a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Research<br />

Committee on <strong>the</strong> biological sciences <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department ; head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Yakutsk Department for All-Union terri<strong>to</strong>rial society, and on <strong>the</strong> edi<strong>to</strong>rial boards <strong>of</strong><br />

“Ecology”, “Cryobiology”, and “Izvestia” <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN.<br />

SSSR. He was also on <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yakutsk Scientific Center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Siberian Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RAS.<br />

Organized in 1991 with a <strong>to</strong>tal staff <strong>of</strong> 264 <strong>of</strong> whom 125 were research scientists and <strong>of</strong><br />

whom six held <strong>the</strong> doc<strong>to</strong>rate and 60 <strong>the</strong> candidate degree. The Scientific Secretary<br />

was Pavel l A. Remigailo.<br />

78. The Language, Literature and His<strong>to</strong>ry Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Iakutskaia (aya)-<br />

Sakha Scientific Center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Branch in Yakutsk was founded<br />

in 1935--<strong>the</strong> first institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yakutsk Branch.<br />

In 1988, <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute <strong>to</strong>taled 153 <strong>of</strong> whom 97 were researchers and <strong>of</strong> whom 11<br />

held <strong>the</strong> doc<strong>to</strong>rate and 62 <strong>the</strong> candidate degree. It was reauthorized by <strong>the</strong> RAS in<br />

1991 with a compliment <strong>of</strong> 131 persons <strong>of</strong> whom 98 were research scientists and <strong>of</strong><br />

whom eight held <strong>the</strong> doc<strong>to</strong>rate and 51 <strong>the</strong> candidate degree--a decline in Personnel.<br />

It underwent two name and status changes prior <strong>to</strong> its present name and ranking that<br />

it was given in 1988. Its major scientific interests are in <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> language,<br />

literature, folklore, his<strong>to</strong>ry and art <strong>of</strong> Yakut peoples, a study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry and<br />

modern processes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State, sociological studies, and <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong><br />

language problems for <strong>the</strong> Yakut, Even, Evenk, and Yukagir languages. The<br />

institute carries on extensive archaeological research that includes <strong>the</strong> Diring-<br />

Yuryakh Paleolithic settlement on <strong>the</strong> Lena river bank. Institute scientist have developed<br />

<strong>the</strong> Yakut alphabet, and are developing grammar and dictionaries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

language. The Direc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute have been: P. A. Oiunskii (1935-37), S. M.<br />

Kochkin (1937-38), V. N. Chmezov (1938-40), R. I. Mestnikov (1940-41), T. A.<br />

Shub (1943-47), A. I. Novgorodov (1947-49), Z. V. Gogolev (1949-63), E. I.<br />

Korkina (1963-84), and since 1984, V. N. Ivanov, D. Hist. S., has been <strong>the</strong><br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r. Structure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute: The institute is organized in<strong>to</strong> five departments:<br />

his<strong>to</strong>ry;<br />

linguistics;<br />

literature, art and folklore;<br />

humanitarian problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> North, and<br />

relations between different nationalities and ethnosocial processes.<br />

The institute has a separate sec<strong>to</strong>r on archeology. Research supervisors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute<br />

include: P. A. Sleptsov, A. N. Myreeva, N. E. Petrov, M. I. Ivanov, T. E.<br />

Andreva, V. A. Robbek, G. S. Syromiatnikov, I. G. Potapov, N. N. Toborukov,<br />
