Retrospect: Established in 1905, receiving its present name in 1932. The Direc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

institute have been: P. N. Sakulin (1930), A. V. Lunacharsky (skii) (1931-33), A.<br />

M. Gorky (1935-36), P. I. Lebedev-Polanskii (1937-47), N. F. Bel’chikov (1948-<br />

55), A. S. Bushmin (1956-65 and 1977-83), V. G. Bazanov (1965-75), A. N.<br />

Iezui<strong>to</strong>v (1983-87) and since 1987, N. N. Ska<strong>to</strong>v has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute.<br />

The institute is <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial state reposi<strong>to</strong>ry for materials on <strong>Russian</strong> and folklore. The<br />

great library has some 570,000 items that include <strong>the</strong> largest specialized book<br />

deposi<strong>to</strong>ry in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> philological disciplines. Its archive <strong>of</strong> this institute holds<br />

825 major collections that include more than 300,000 manuscript holdings with<br />

several million pages <strong>of</strong> manuscript text covering, military his<strong>to</strong>ry, social and<br />

revolutionary his<strong>to</strong>ry, <strong>the</strong> Polish independence movement, urban his<strong>to</strong>ry,<br />

institutional his<strong>to</strong>ry, and <strong>the</strong> records <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tsarist Censor--spanning <strong>the</strong> years from<br />

<strong>the</strong> 12th century <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> present Dr. Nikolai N. Ska<strong>to</strong>v, has been <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r since<br />

2. A. M. Gorkiy World Literature Institute in Moscow.<br />

Located at 25a Povarskaia (aya) st., Moscow. 121069. Directed by<br />

Corresponding Member Feliks F. Kuznetsov.<br />

Kuznetsov, Feliks F. D. Phlg. S. Born in 1931. Corresponding member since<br />

December 1987. In 1988, he was named Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> A. M. Gorkiy World<br />

Literature Institute in Moscow that dates back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> mid-1930s and that serves as <strong>the</strong><br />

principal place for research on contemporary <strong>Russian</strong> and foreign literature in<br />

Russia.<br />

Retrospect: Established by a decree <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CC CPSU in 1932, <strong>the</strong><br />

institute from 1934 <strong>to</strong> 1938 was named <strong>the</strong> Gorky Institute <strong>of</strong> Literature subordinate<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Central Executive Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> . In 1938, <strong>the</strong> institute had its original<br />

name res<strong>to</strong>red and was transferred <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. Direc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute have<br />

been: L. B. Kamenev (1934), I. K. Luppo(1935-40), L. I. Ponomarev (1940-44),<br />

V. F. Shishmarev (1944-47), A. M. Egolin (1947-52), I. I. Anisimov (1952-66),<br />

B. L. Suchkov (1967-74), Iurii Ia. Barabash (1975-77), G. P. Berdnikov (1977-<br />

870, and since 1987, F. F. Kuznetsov has been <strong>the</strong> institute Direc<strong>to</strong>r. The institute<br />

has a staff <strong>of</strong> 246 researchers <strong>of</strong> whom 74 hold doc<strong>to</strong>ral degrees and 122 hold<br />

candidate degrees. One academician and six corresponding members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RAS are<br />

on <strong>the</strong> staff. The institute serves as <strong>the</strong> principal body in <strong>the</strong> academy for research on<br />

contemporary <strong>Russian</strong> and foreign literature.<br />
